Stop making a big deal about it and only then WILL IT STOP. To help yourself from worrying about a 6 year old sucking her fingers think about the far bigger problems in the world

We tried tons of things to get my now 10yr old to stop sucking her thumb and fingers. Here are a few things I've learned:

This is a habit and it takes awhile to break a habit. So try to remember that.

There is a kind of nail polish you can put on her fingers to help her stop. Also there are thumb and finger guards you can put on your child. (see links below)

Also remind your child that she may need braces some day due to finger sucking. My 10yr old just got out braces and I still catch her sucking her thumb at night.

Good luck!

I myself used to do that. This is going to sound bad because you always want to avoid this but, bribe her. Reward her for not doing it. Pick something she likes, like painting her nails for example, and tell her you will let her do it so she can be more grown up if she doesn't suck on her fingers. DON'T PUT THAT CREAM ON HER FINGERS!!!!! It DOESN'T work!!!!! All it will do is make her wash her hands more and she'll keep doing it anyway.

Why would I want the 6 year old to stop doing something that gives her comfort and security?

My little sister didn't outgrow it untill she was 9 years old. There wasn't anyway to really stop her she did it on her own. She only did it at home and mainly when she was going to sleep. Her teeth (child and adult set) were never affected by her sucking her fingers.

I am sure she will let go of it on her own.

Don't harp at her...this will just make her tense and probably do it more. Talk to your dentist if you have a great dentist they will help you with this. Sometimes kids will respond better to the dentist or their assistants better than their own parents. My dentist's assistant got my oldest to give up her binky in one visit. Keep in mind that it is probably a comfort issue at this point and maybe you could find her a special doll or teddy? Good luck.

I know this sounds really mean but you should put some kind of pepper on her fingers. She will learn real quick. My daughter did.
