I have a 13 year old daughter who has ADHD. This is her second year in 7th Grade and she is not improving. She will not turn in homework, wont sit still, keeps making up excuses to leave class, and spends all class goofing off with other kids. She has been grounded, had extra activities canceled nothing iis helping. Anyone have any suggestions on things that have worked in similar situations in the past?

We have tried different medicine, she sees a therapist, we do tell her if she would just do her homework she would get her things back, we changed it this year to a week to week thing so if on Friday her teachers say everything was turned in she would get everything back until next Friday if they said she did not do her work, we do make her do homework in the evenings but if she doesn't write things down how do we make her do it.........

I'm really not trying to step on your toes here, or insult you. . . but you are the parent, what are you doing to assure she does what she is supposed to? I understand that she is 13 and has to take responsibility, however, she is still a kid. My parents had the same issue with me. My dad finally got fed up and sat with me until my homework was completed. Then, he kept in contact with my teachers on a daily basis. He took me to school and watched me hand in my work. I hated my dad walking me to class and coming to school to speak to my teachers everyday, so . . . I started doing my work on my own. I know life is busy, I'm sure you have a job, maybe other children to tend to. But, you being her parent, you have some responsibility here too.
I'm sorry to assume you're not doing these things already. I just didn't see it anywhere in your description. Also, try to stay away from shoving meds into her. Medication is a quick fix and requires no work, teach her how to be responsible on her own.

Well, I guess since you have tried discipline, you could try rewarding her for good grades. Tell her that you will take her shopping everytime that she brings home an A. Or whatever you know your daughter is most capable of. If she is a B student then tell her to bring home B's and you will take her shopping. Unfortunately, the way that teenagers are viewing the world these days is purely materialistic. That seems to be the only thing that they respond to. I would find out what she really wants to do and tell her that can be her reward for good grades.
Good luck!!

You need to address this issue with the school's principal and guidance counselor. There is an Individual Education Programs (IEP) for "special" students available no matter what size the school is. You are entitled to a copy of your states' Parental Rights regarding Special Education brochure. The school has to work with you and your child or they have to accomodate her elsewhere if they do not have the means or capacity to do so themselves. Do it now, prolonging this could be detrimental to your daughter's education.

Perhaps giving her incentive will help improve her act a bit. If you can afford it maybe a trip to Disney World, or some other fun place will encouage her to stay on track. If you are short on cash maybe start with small incetives like giving her a digital camera or having friends spend the night.

It could be that the medication she is taking is no longer working. This usually happens around her age if she has been taking the same thing for a considerable period of time. My son went through this about the same age. We had to change his medication and things got a good bit better. The rest is just normal adolescence.

Maybe therapy and perhaps medication. I know it might sound drastic but I hear it has great results.
