I'm going to be getting a standard Blitz karate gi soon from here: http://www.ukfitnesssupplies.co.uk/mall/productpage.cfm/UKFitnessSuppliesLtd/BLITZ%2DKAR%2D01/76676
I'm 5'3" and this would at first mean I need the 160cm/size3 suit, however I'm worried that the waist might be too small for me, as I'm a size 16, which is bigger than average. I'm worried about getting the size up, as I've got a short (29") inside leg.
What size should I take?

Oh, I also should say I have large hips! This means the bum has to be bigger than average too.
Would a 4 shrink enough? Or should I risk a 3?

To bonnejovi - please don't waste your time and mine with stupid 'answers'. My figure is fine and hourglass, and just because I have boobs and hips as a woman should does NOT mean I am fat or unhealthy (surely the fact I practise karate indicates I'm trying to look after myself). If you've nothing to contribute that's helpful, don't contribute at all.
To the other posters - you've been really helpful - thanks.

TRY A SIZE 4, IF IT'S TOO LOOSE THEN WASH IT AND DRY
IT, IT WILL SHRINK A LITTLE BUT I THINK IT WILL BE ALRIGHT.
I'M 5'7 AND I DID IT FOR MYSELF. GIVE IT A SHOT....

Yeah I agree with Jerry L and several others, getting a size larger, and then tailoring it to your size is about the best thing to do theres no half sizes.
So getting the legs taken in a little and riolloing up the sleeves will help better until the uniform shrinks enough, it'll take a lot of washings to get it to shrink.
if you have patches to sew on, I'd take it ot have the patches and the alterations done at the same time.

actually, I would get what ever size fits your weight. Don't worry too much about the height part, as a plain white gi, you can get the legs cut and hemmed and you'll never know the difference.
I don't know how much you weigh, but I would look in the weight column versus the height column.
We have a lady in our school who's about 5'1" but she wears a size 6 because of her size. Some people just can't help their weight, and I'm glad you are trying to do something to improve your health and have some fun at the same time.
Good luck to you.

Most Karate pants have an Elastic waistband, and use a drawstring to tighten at the waist. You should be fine with the size 3.

4 is kind of the generic size for women of your height. If you are looking for a uniform more suited to the female for check out bujin design, they have a line of uniforms taylored especially for women.

Kikn4JC has the right idea. Get a 4 and tailor it to you. You can always hem up the pants and roll up the sleeves.

Go for the 4. If you're strenuously exercising, you need to be comfortable and be able to move freely.
