My dog wakes me up every day at 3 a.m. because my step dad leaves for work at this time and feeds his dog. My dog wants to get up and eat too. He is a 1.5 year old rat terrier. He won't let me sleep until I have opened the door or fed him.

See I would say if you don’t wanna get up in the morning don’t…break the routine for the dog….don’t give in…cause if you do then that’ll just become routine like for him and you’ll have to do it again and again….so when he does wake you up don’t do anything (he’ll try that for a few days and stop when it doesn’t work)…and then you could feed him when you wake in the morning and stuff..:D

The best solution, I think, is to work out an understanding with your family. I'm sure your step-dad doesn't want to interrupt your sleep, so first kindly let him know what is happening and you can work together to find a solution. Here are two that I see:

You can offer to take on the extra responsibility of feeding both dogs in the morning. I'm sure your step father would be very proud of you for stepping forward and making the offer, and it will also help you out because you won't have to be getting up early with your dog.

If his dog is being fed at multiple times, or for some reason you can't work out a schedule that he feels would work, ask if it would be possible to put a doggie door on your bedroom door, and if he would mind feeding your dog in the mornings. Of course, if your dog is up at the same time to eat, then he'll probably be waking you for a trip outside, also.

So if you can work out taking on the responsibility for both dogs, I am certain that your step-father will not only be willing to work with you, but proud of the adult way you handled the situation.

If you don't want to leave your bedroom door cracked so your dog can go in and out because you feel safer with it locked get a slide chain lock with a long chain-any hardware store can help you and one of your parents that way the door is secure but the opening should be wide enough for the dog or you can install a pet door or make one into your bedroom door--get his dogfood ready before you go to bed-if dry put in his bowl and keep on counter covered and then your stepdad can just give him or if canned(although dry is much better for the health of his teeth and canned for occasional treat) can keep covered in the refrigerator until your stepdad gives it to him---if none of these are a option then hav dog not be in your bedroom which now would be unkind to the dog since he's used to being with you at night or somehow secure headset-Not working and cover the headset part where the wiring is with heavy tape so he can't chew and swallow wiring or tape(tragic consequence) for if he can't hear step dad then won't know----but the safest is making a small doggy door for then he'll just leave the room an come back in when he's finished eating and there will be no further need to wake you up .Hope I gave you a solution.

Unless you live on a farm and your step dad is getting up to plow the south 40, there is NO REASON his dog should be eating at 3:00 in the morning.

Offer to feed your dog AND his dog at a decent hour- like 7:00 AM. Explain that this will allow you to get a full night's sleep, both dogs can be happy and YOU will be a much happier and awake step daughter. Everybody wins!

Dog behaviour is basically a question of habbit. One way to make him sleep through the night is to give him good exercise during the day-preferably a long walk in the evening (if you find time ) and make sure that he attends to his excretions before he goes to bed. That way there are less chances of his asking to be let out at the middle of night. That way even if your dog wakes up when your step dad goes for work, more chances of him going back to sleep.

I have an 8 month old Black Lab and he sleeps like a baby through the night. It's going to require a little more effort on your part, but what works for me is taking him out for a final walk at about 10:00 pm. We stay out for about 1/2 hour and really go at it. He comes in huffing and puffing, slurps down some water and slumps down and is out until the next morning. When I say out, I mean he actually lays on his back and snores! Good luck!

I agree -- I think as long as your dog can hear your dad and his dog up and about, he's going to want to be up and about, too. My dog wakes up early when someone's staying with us or we're staying with someone (like at my mom's or dad's) -- if the other people get up and move about early, she wants up, too. When it's just us at home, she sleeps later than I do! (I often have to wake her in the mornings for a walk before I go to work.)

If you have a place to let your dog sleep where he won't be able to hear the outside noise, you may be OK. The problem is finding a place like that. Dogs have incredible senses of hearing and smell, generally, so I think you're doomed to either get up at 3 every day, or make some way for your dog to sneak out of the room and let you sleep.

Can most dogs sleep through the night without having to potty?

Simplest answers are the best answers.

Either keep the door open or have your dad feed the dog for you.

He is waking up because your step dad is up, and not because; he is feeding the other dog.

Either you have to leave the door open so the dog can get out and you don't have to open it or you have to expect to get up at three and let the dog out.

The feeding thing is optional.

You could fed both dogs when you get up if that is easier.

Tell your step dad to get a better job, or ask his boss to change his start time, or simply ask your dog to stop waking you up at 3 am, if your dog decides to ignore your request, then you must punish him by waking him up every time he's sleeping, and then laugh at him, and ignore him the rest of the day. These basic steps for stopping dogs from waking people up at 3 am can be found in Dr. Schmengy Caninington's book titled, "How to stop your dog from waking you up at 3 am" published in 1929;) LOL

What the dog is doing is very normal. A dog can hear the slightest sound, that is part of their survival instinct. As long as the present routine is maintained, you Will have company at three AM.

If you can find some way to ensure absolute quiet, he probably will sleep through the night.
