Does anyone know if children as young as 5 or 6 have ever been correctly diagnosed with depression? I would like either educated or experienced opinions/facts if anyone has any.

Yes children as young as 5&6 can have depression. I know this from personal experince. My 7yr old son was diagnosed with ADHD at age 5. I saw more than just hyper activity in him. I saw anger and telling me people dont like him , him crying. Come to find out my son has Bi-Polar disorder along with me. The best thing to do is take your child to see a child psychologist.

Yes. In addition to what has been written, a child can also inherit depression, even though no one in the family admits to having depression.

You want to see a pediatric psychiatrist. You can call your local children's hospital for a reference. It is very important to diagnose correctly. Some children are bipolar and others are depressed. Bipolar can be confused with ADHD as well.

If you are a parent of a depressed child, it is important to read books and websites dealing with children and depression. I would also briefly read about bipolar in children in order to rule it out.

My opinion is that yes anyone of any age can be depressed but you must see a doctor. I would first rule out anything physical, then see a good child psychologist. I do know, though, that depression in children does not look like it does in adults: children oftentimes show anger instead of the classic symptoms of crying, sleeping and lethargy. good luck.

Yes, children that young have been diagnosed with depression. If you know of a child who appears depressed take them to a CHILD PSYCHIATRIST.

There are many problems that can surface in a child that age.
Your school district should provide, or help you provide a diagnosis and treatment if there is a real problem.
Talk to your peduatrician also.
Best of luck.

Yes. Stop feeding the child fast food and see how his mood changes. It's amazing.
