If you don't have enormous hard drives on your computer, care about fancy menus or plan to do any editing of the footage, standalone DVD recorders run pretty cheap nowadays--all you'd have to do is to plug in your 8mm camcorder/deck into the AV inputs of the machine and hit "play" and "record" on the respective machines. DVD recorder decks have settings to record at high quality (about 1 hour of footage per DVD-R) and standard quality (about 2 hours); I wouldn't recommend recording at a lower setting (most recorders have settings to cram 6 or 8 hours of footage into a disk), as the image quality will really suffer.
DVD-R's run really cheap nowadays, too--great quality RITEKs can be had for about $30 for a 100-pack at places like supermediastore.com.

I just completed transferring my video tape collection to dvd. I used a stand-alone dvd recorder (Lite-on lvw-5005). It was as simple as connecting the camcorder output to the dvd recorder input, press the play button on the camcorder and press the record button on the dvd recorder. Just be cautioned that it would take a long time to convert all your videos - because the conversion is in real-time (i.e. it'd take 1 hour to convert 1 hour of video to dvd).

Get a set top DVD burner and core of DVD R disks that are highly complatible with your player.
If you camcorder has an S-Video slot, find a DVD burner with S-Video in and get a cable to connect them.
Then do it.
If you go to Walgreens or Wal-Mart it is $20 per Hi 8 tape.
Ten tapes would be the price of a burner, cable and core of disks.

I have a TDK Indicapture tower that plugs into the computer and your 8mm camcorder plugs into that. When I bought it, it was around $100. There are forums online that could help you with this also...Maybe try searching for "video forum"...

the best and easiest way would be to pay someone to do it for you. otherwise, you'll need a video capture card, software, and a DVD+R.
