This has only happened twice before, once about two months ago, and once last night. My westie is about 8 months old and when this happens he looks very distressed and tries to bark at me but all that comes out is a honking noise, much like a duck. The first time it happened i thought that he had swollowed something and it was stuck in his windpipe, but after inspecting him he was fine, and he stoped after a while and was fine. It really scared me, but it didnt happen again so I forgot about it. Then last night the same thing happened, he looked very scared and distressed and was trying to bark at me, but all that came out was a honking noise. then he vomited a large amount, and was fine after that. I heard from someone that it is sometimes typical for small dogs wind pipes to collapse, and this is nomal. But it dosent sound normal to me and I am worried for the little guy. If it is his windpipe collapsing, it sounds serious to me, you kind of need the wind to go in and out.

It sounds to me like he is coughing. Most dogs I have heard make horrible sounds when they cough, like a duck or a goose. Especially if he was fine after vomiting, it sounds like something didn't agree with him and he had to cough it up and get it out of his system.

I wouldn't worry about it unless it happens frequently or he vomits blood or he can't breathe.

My parents have had dogs on a farm for years, and I have seen them cough up and vomit all kinds of things, then run off and play.

The trying to bark at you sounds exactly like a dog looks when he is trying to vomit up something that doesn't agree with him. Dogs have the ability to activate their gag reflex without external stimulation, and they do look distressed and like they want to bark, and then they make horrible sounds and barf up something nasty.

When in doubt, ask the vet, but this sounds pretty harmless to me.

My Pup does the same thing. Of course only your vet can tell you what it is, yet your dog won't do this on command in the vet's office so it can be difficult to diagnose. Fortunately mine did this while at the groomers, and I was told that it is called a collapsing trachea or pharynx I can never remember which. All that happens is your dog has inhaled to quickly causing the wind pipe to get smaller and not allow the same amount of air in. To help relieve this gently rub the dogs throat and calm him down. If this is what your dog is experiencing it is not dangerous, but again a vets opinion is always important.

Sounds like a reverse sneeze. My dog does it alot when he gets overly excited. I pet him to calm him and and it goes away. If you are at all concerned about it take him to a vet. Chances are it is nothing.

Hello; I would take him rigth to the Vets. I thought it was just a funny sound but not the vomit. My Black Lab sometimes sounds like a pig rooting for truffles, but that's funny ,yours is serious.

Some dogs do have asthma, but please keep in mind, most dogs make some pretty disgusting gagging noises. My dog coughs occassionally and there is nothing wrong with her.
