Grossman ~
In 1987 I was fortunate enough to be in Ireland, being invited there by Frank Mulligan Barry McGuigans Trainer, whom I met through Martin McGary from McGary's Boxing Club in Beverly, Illinois, Martin and Frank went quite a few years back when they were fighting in Ireland, anyways I just won the Golden Gloves in the Open Division and was seriously considering turning Pro.
Barry had just gotten beaten pretty bad by Stevie Cruz in Vegas in 1986, Barry's people claim that "He was suffering from heat exhaustion" but I watched the fight on NBC and he was just being outworked by a guy who wanted it more in my opinion.
Frank had set it up where I would spar with Barry in Clones, that's where Barry was from hence the nickname "The Clones Cyclone" at first glance Barry didn't seem like that much to me, he looked small and very weak. When I was fighting I never took, at least I think I never took a backward step, I was always moving forward throwing hooks and uppercuts. I wanted to feel him out the first round to see how he moved around and would try to catch how he threw his punches.
Now mind you I've never been knocked out or even dazed sparring or in competition, Barry hit me with a overhand right on the left side of my temple and I actually felt my toes curl-up inside my boots, I did everything in my power to stay standing up, he must have seen my eyes roll to the back of my head so he backed off and let me get my barrings.
Second round I thought I was doing pretty good, I thought I was landing some pretty good shots than BOOM I got hit with an uppercut and the back of my head hit my back. Barney Eastwood, Barry's Manager stopped it and called me out of the ring, I was lightly protesting but wanted pretty much to leave.
So the answer to your question is "No, I couldn't and probably still can't beat Barry McGuigan." Believe me, he can take a shot and he hits harder than a mule.
Thanks for the question Grossman and thanks for the painful memory.

Barry McGuigan? That's cowardly - he's been out of the ring for ages. But you look like the sort of guy who would run.

No !!!
I've met Mr McGuigan and a perfect gentleman he is.
He's not lost his shape or technique and that was his strength,
maybe not as fast as he used to be but I certainly wouldn't mess with him and he's not as small as he looks.
One of the greatest British boxers ever
Watch the McGuigan v Pedrosa fight AMAZING !!!!!

To "smack him up" as you say, you'd have to hit him first, he's getting on a bit now but I bet he's still too fast for you, having boxed at an amateur level myself I know speed is far more important than size and/or weight.

doubtful since I've never even been an amateur boxer and he's a former champ. I was a nominal fan of his back in the 80s.
