Platelets or thrombocytes are the cell fragments circulating in the blood that are involved in the cellular mechanisms of primary haemostasis leading to the formation of blood clots. Dysfunction or low levels of platelets predisposes to bleeding, while high levels, although usually asymptomatic, may increase the risk of thrombosis.

Like red blood cells, platelets are anuclear (no cell nucleus) and discoid (disc shaped); they measure 1.5–3.0 μm in diameter. The body has a very limited reserve of platelets, so they can be rapidly depleted. They contain RNA, a canalicular system, and several different types of granules; lysosomes (containing acid hydrolases), dense bodies (containing ADP, ATP serotonin and calcium) and alpha granules (containing fibrinogen, factor V, vitronectin, thrombospondin and von Willebrand factor), the contents of which are released upon activation of the platelet. These granule contents play an important role in both hemostasis and in the inflammatory response.

.Platelets are Thrombocytes. Normal count is 150,000-300,000/mm. Thrombocytopenia is a low platelet count. They are produced in the red bone marrow. there major functions are Hemostasis which is the prevention of blood loss Through vascular constriction, platelet plug or Chemical clotting So the major problem would be if you don't have enough, you may have trouble clotting depending on the severity. and if they are abnormally clotting that can cause MI, CVA, PE or a myriad of other things. thats why people with certain heart conditions receive heparin to keep the blood thinner to avoid the clotting with in the coronary arteries.

Platelets are one of the elements found in your blood compounds and it helps in blood clotting. When an injury occurs anywhere in the body, platelets will start acting around that injury site and start the clotting process in order for our body for not bleeding further. Excessive bleeding is dangerous to our body, it will cause haemoragic shock. Low platelet counts in the body will cause our body to have a higher tendency to bleed longer and clots slower. High platelet counts is not necessarily good because they will clot unnecessarily and is dangerous sometimes. Normal range of platelet counts in the body is 150-400x10(9 times)/L. Hope this helps.

You have platelets in your blood. If the white blood count gets high enough you have some kind of infection. There is a disease called TTP that affects blood platelets too.
