put a mattress under the bed where the supprt would normally be. I had to do that also as my son broke the support board in half. you could also get a piece of plywood cut to the size you need

For your childs health you need either the support wood or a bunkie board (piece of wood basically covered in fabric). Just a mattress on the frame can't be good for his back

if its anything like the twin size you can just go to home depot and get some 2x4s or whatever size. also, can't you just put the mattress on the floor? that's what we do - so the sides of the bed are like rails in case the kids roll too far at night

You need the wood supports or else the mattress is not being supported and your kid can fall through.

The mattress would fall through.... kids are rough on beds. You need to have the support there or its just negligence.
