my chest has hurt on and off for the past month. it's in the middle, but towards the right side. it really feels like i need to burp (gross, but that's what it feels like). last night i was really nauseated. i'm really thirsty all of the time (i'm always drinking something). my right arm has been numb on and off for the past few days. i take medicines (that i have to have) that can cause numbness, low sodium, and a multitude of other things.

my question:
is it something serious, like chest pain or dehydration or just acid? my doctor doesn't have available appoinments and tells me if i think its serious enough to go to the e.r. i really don't want to do that.

and btw, i'm only 25.

First - the only way to tell is to go to the doctor or ER and have everything checked - AND I highly encourage you to do that. If your primary doc can't see you, then get a referral to a cardiologist right away. Just because you are 25 doesn't mean it's not your heart. It probably is something more along the lines of acid reflux or pancreatitus. I went to the ER many times saying I was having chest pains, they would check my heart, say it was fine and send me home. Finally I was at a different hospital because my husband was having surgery there, and the pain got so bad my family made me go down to the ER, and it turns out it was pancreatitus the whole time!! Once I got that under control I have not had the chest pains since.

If you get the all clear heart wise, then get an appointment with a gastroenterologist to check for pancreatitis, reflux and esophogeal ulcer.

Good luck and I hope you start feeling better soon.

Wow. It seems like your describing something similar to what I experienced as a kid and occasionally as an adult. I get those achy, sharp pain in my chest / rib area. Often the pain is mild but sometimes it's so bad I can barley take a breath. It also feels like it starts at the bottom of my rib cage and then travels up my side as it slowly goes away. I was told by my doctor it was "growing" pains. Then when I was older, I brought it up again and he said it could be a muscle spam. It's been months since I've had one. With me, the pain only last a few seconds and at the most a minute or two. They also only seem to happen once or twice in a day when i do have them. I would suggest that if they occur more frequently, multiple times in a day I'd see someone about it. It could be nothing or it could be something (kind of obvious answer).

I'm 31 and also had similar/painful situations in the past that turned out to be acid reflux. However, I'd certainly get a medical opinion and not rely on this forum completely. Having said that, I could cure my acid reflux completely by practicing yoga. It doesn't take too long - may be 10-15 minutes every morning. All you do is sit down with your legs crossed and breathe in and out rapidly while somewhat squeezing your stomach. It's a little difficult to explain but you might want to do some research on "kapalbharati" - it's the exercise I'm talking about. It may not work for all but for me, I don't have to take antacids and can still eat spicy/acidic food sometimes even at night without worrying about acid reflux.

It sounds like gastric reflux or acid reflux - it can cause nausea and severe chest pain (like you're having a heart attach). Drinking plenty of water will help wash down the acid in your stomach. You can also take milk of magnesia or Pepcid complete to help alleviate the symptoms until you can see a doctor. Also, try to prop yourself up while sleeping. If you lay down flat, the acid can come back up into your stomach.

Usually with a heart attack it will be your left side affected....But i had a heartattack 2 years ago, i was 34...I felt like i was just gettin a bad chest cold...I started sweating very bad, couldnt get enough to drink...And then kinda of passed out. My (ex) husband rushed me to the ER, and the put me on a helicopter and sent me to the Oklahoma Heart Hospital...I was havin a heartattack...Thank goodness there was no damage to my heart....But the signs and symptoms were so different that what you normally hear people talk about...Please dont take any chances...Its better to be checked than be sorry...Good Luck to ya!!

Hey guy, chest pains are nothing to fool around with.
Last November I had the same symtoms that you are describing.
I took antacids, drank baking sada and a number of other things thinking it would go away..I finally went to the ER and found out that I had a 90% blocked artery in my heart.
Better go now and have it checked out. Or in the morning you could wake up dead.

Any family history of cardiac illness? Could be esophageal, but I'd get my buns into an ER with chest pain, and let them decide. One EKG can save your life, or ease your mind.

I get this and it's related to acid reflux, if you take an antacid does the pain stop?
