If the dog is living indoors, he should be fine. It is better than making him live with an overly thick, matted coat.

That said, sometimes when dogs with double coats (like shelties) are shaved their coats do not grow back properly. You would be better to thoroughly brush out the coat than to shave it down.

Why would you shave a sheltie? Unless the vet reccommended it for medical reasons, you shouldn't shave it. Their coat acts as protection against the cold in the winter and against the heat in the summer. Please don't shave your dog, instead, take 5 minutes a day to brush it. you'll both be happier

My father in law owns a sheltie and he was told once that the fur will not grow back as soft and full if he shaved it... not sure if this is accurate, though.

Well, it is true that it won't grow back the same way-it will be rough and patchy because it actually damages the hair when you shave it..It does not actually hurt the dog, but does lessen the skin's protection against heat and cold. They also seem to be more susceptible to skin diseases in general. It is basically according to your preference, but i would never recommend doing it...

One bad one (effect) freeze! Actually Hyperthermia due to prolonged exposure! Oh, but you'll buy a cute coat for her... to replace the missing coat God gave her! Are you going to sell the Sheltie hairs for some reason?! otherwise a summer trim is all any pooch needs; ever!

its not a good idea to shave a dog like a sheltie. they have a balance in their coats and it is ment to protect them from the cold, sun.

Never shave down a double coated breed!!
the coat is there for insulation whether it is hot or cold. It is protection for very delicate skin. It also helps in heating and cooling the body.
If you need directions on how to groom to the best effect, please e-mail me and I can give you all the tricks whether it is a kennel dog, yard dog, bedroom dog, or show dog.
Before you shave, please, please e-mail me!!

You should NEVER remove a dogs coat (unless it is matted beyond all saving). Their coats insulate them from both heat and cold.

Ask a groomer...but my opinion is that if you dont shave it all off, it'll be ok....besides, the hair will grow back so i think your dog should be ok!
