The best video player for OS X that plays most video and audio formats is VLC media player. With it, you'll be able to play a wide variety of video files, including DVDs. Here's a complete feature list: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/features.html

There's also a plugin for Quicktime called Flip4Mac which enables you to play wmv files without downloading Windows Media Player.

Quicktime/iTunes will play all mpegs and .mov files very easily, and have the best interface on the mac. With plugins from DivX (http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/) and Flip4Mac (http://www.flip4mac.com/) they will also play most AVI movies and windows media movies. An added benefit of quicktime is that it is already installed on your mac

For an application that will play almost everything straight after download, go for VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/), as it will play pretty much all of the formats mentioned above. However in the past I have experienced some problems when playing windows media files with it.

I would not recommend MPlayer OS X or Realplayer unless you really have to use them.

I've started using the VLC player. I'm not too crazy about its interface, but it does seem to play pretty much everything I throw at it. I use it as my failsafe.
