Virgil's BBQ on 44th between 6th and Broadway. I know this isn't what you're looking for but still good. Yummy bbq, it's not a stupid chain like Friday's or Applebee's. If you want good Italian, I'd honestly get the heck out of Times Sq and hop in a cab! Bar Pitti in the West Village (6th betw. Houston and Bleecker) is excellent for Italian, not super-expensive and I'm told that there's always celebrity sitings. I've been a million times and never seen anyone...or maybe I just don't care or notice!
