If you've tried physical therapy and are still in pain, you might try looking into a pain management clinic. I am in pain management, and my doctor is wonderful. I finally have my life back. You have a right to be free from pain, and there are medicines out there that really work. My doctor is a diplomate of the American Academy of Pain Management. You can put your information in on their website (http://www.aapainmanage.org/search/MemberSearch.php) and they will give you a list of members in your area. Don't let people who have listened to the propaganda and scare tactics of the DEA frighten you-- it's perfectly okay to take strong prescription painkillers when you have real pain, and if you follow your doctor's orders you will not become addicted. Less than 1% of chronic pain patients become addicted when they follow their doctor's orders. Pain can be as debillitating and devastating as cancer and rob you of the life you deserve. Narcotics are the oldest and safest form of drugs for managing pain, and pain doctors have the training to determine the drug and dose that will allow you to be as comfortable as possible with the fewest side effects. As I said, I myself am currently in a pain management program, so feel free to e-mail me any time if you have any questions or there is any way I can help.

I also have this problem and like you I have been told many things.

It all depends on what's causing the problem. If it's arthritis, not much can be done, except to treat the symptoms. I am on a pain medicine called tramadol (Ultram). It works good but has low addiction, even though it's an opioid/narcotic.

Good posture and not lifting heavy things helps.

my back pain started when i was 40 i did stretching every morning, knees to chest, i took ibuprofin for 20 years when i was 60 the pain went away. as you get older the pads shrink back and stop pressing on the nerves.. talk to a back therapist. they have classes to help you deal with it. posture is very important squat, don't bend over, etc.
