When you see someone yawning, and you feel your jaw about to do the same, do you try and stop it?
Why is yawning contagious anyway...
(I asked you... not google...)

When you yawn it is actually a way of taking in Oxygen that your body is lacking. Seeing someone else do it and then having to do it is a mental thing. Some say that it is because back in caveman days that was the "bedtime" signal, one person would yawn and the rest would start.
Part of the reason for doing it when you are tired is that your body is slowing down when it is tired and the yawn is a way of taking in the oxogyn that you werent getting enough of to try and wake up.

Nope. I may hide it behind my hand to be polite, but I don't try to stop it unless I would feel very self-conscious doing so.

I am taking a guess as to why we all yawn together. We all have similar circadian rhythms. So we all use up our breakfast food about the same time (10-11:30 in the morning and 2-3:30 in the afternoon). Yawning helps pull blood sugar out of storage in the liver and get it into the bloodstream. So lots of us are low on blood sugar at the same time, so we all are primed to start yawning anyway. And when one starts the ball rolling . . .

Sometimes I try not to yawn. We yawn because we are thinking about yawning, that's why it's contagious
