According to my favorite diet website, you need about 1800 a day if you have a light activity level, to avoid actually losing weight.

It also says your ideal weight is 107- 140 lb. Take that with a grain of salt, though. If you don't look or feel wasted, 98 may be right for you.

But it also says that, by your body mass index (17), you are technically underweight.

My hunch is, your doctor is right.

You are only 13 and it's ok to watch you're weight if you are in taking 1000 calories a day. You could try adding an extra 500 and try to stick to protine or soy protine this will give you're body a healthy dose of fats that help you're body. Keep in mind that you are still young and you may start to change body wise and this may add some weight but just keep you're BMI in control and you should be good. Also remember to take some type of multi-vitame pill for example like from A-Zink you're body will still need to get all it's needed nutriants.

I would say don't worry about it so much. We are all different and I think it is a mistake to tell someone that they need a certain number of calories to be healthy. You should eat healthily and when you are hungry. At age 13, your metabolism is fast and so that will likely keep you at a low weight. As you get older, the weight may come on with the same number of calories.

I would tend to worry if you were on the extremes (too thin or obese). Anywhere is the middle is fine as long as you are getting adequate nutrition.

I recommend you eat what you are eating now, but add a supplement drink like a Boost or a Slim Fast (not to lose weight by replacing a meal, but in addition to your meals). This is what the doctor recommended for my son who was not eating a whole lot.
