I dont know it just kind of happened while hanging out together , and I gave my word I wouldnt hang out with the ex anymore cuz it upsets the one I'm with. Does this make me a cheater or a bad person.

Yup, you're a cheater for messing around with another person when you're already with someone, and you're a bad person for cheating, and for doing something that you know you're current gf would get upset about. Obviously you don't care enough about her. Tell her what you did and let her go. She deserves better.

You made a commitment to someone. Someone who trusted you. By choosing to fool around with your ex, you broke that trust and hurt the one you're with now.
Your only option is not to cover it up but to tell your current love what happened and pray for forgiveness.
Although, my personal opinion on this is that you've shown that you aren't over your ex yet.
If this is the case you can't, in good conscious, be with someone else.
In a more direct answer to your question, fooling around w/ someone while you're with someone else makes you a cheater. Cheating on someone who loves and trust you makes you an extremely bad guy.
Get your act together man.

Don't get caught up! "hanging out with your ex" especially if you still share a magnetic chemistry is not healthy. You knew the answer to this question before you asked. Be careful, once could lead to more x etc...not to mention, no one likes to be hurt!
