Diet sodas aren't good for you...artificial sweeteners should be avoided.

Some interesting stuff about Nutra Sweet.... When it first came out in the early 80's, there was a big fuss about it and I remember the details very well. Funny how so much of that has been swept aside.

First of all, it was not approved for use in any food or beverage that is heated. In the early testing, it gave off a compound similar to fomaldehyde under those conditions. How ironic that the first food product to include it was Swiss Miss Hot Chocolate....

Nutra Sweet flunked its safety tests seven times. Miraculously--on the eighth try, the FDA pushed it through. Of course, the original patent belonged to a pharmaceutical company...

Also in the 80's--as people started consuming Nutra Sweet regularly in diet soda--especially Diet Coke--it was noted that epileptics who were formerly stable with medication, were starting to have seizures again. And people who suffered from migraines [which, BTW--is thought to be the mildest form of epilepsy] found that Nutra Sweet was a trigger.

As with any drug--and that's what Nutra Sweet is--many people will suffer no side effects whatsoever. But that doesn't make it safe for everyone. In fact, if your child was born with a genetic condition called PKU, you'll notice that any product containing Nutra Sweet [or the generic aspartame] has a warning on the label. Kids with PKU have to avoid Phenylalanine--which is a component of Nutra Sweet--because their bodies can't process it and the "buildup" of this amino acid wreaks havoc in their brains and nervous systems.

It's just bad stuff. If you want to lose weight, either drink water or have regular soda in moderation.

I dont think anyone knows for sure of aspertame, or any of the other artificial sweetners are truely safe. Every so often, a study will come out and say its not safe, then a few months later they will say it is totally safe... I dont think we will ever really know. They are relying on animal studies, which may or may not bring the same results as the possible effects on humans.

IMHO, I would think it would be better to drink regular soda. However, I am really not a soda drinker. I have heard doctors say that it is especially hard on your bladder, and contains a tremendous amount of salt. I drink an occasional cup or coffee or tea, juice, and water, and only maybe once in a blue moon a sip or two of soda.

I would recommend you to do a thourough search on yahoo or google to read about aspertame, and make the best decision you can for yourself.

A couple of months ago I got a bulletin that said Aspartame was originally developed as a very potent ANT POISON! Also, that is suspected of being a causative agent for a lot of illnesses and there is a group that is trying to get the goverbnment to take it off the market. I won't touch anything that has Aspartame in it because of that.
