I agree that it gets louder with age...as we become more aware of it. We do become used to - and therefore ignore - the sound. As we go about our days, we get so caught up in the minutae of our lives that we forget what's really important - doing something good, and worth doing.
I think it's a soft humming sound, a beautiful one...

It doesn't matter because we all get used to every sound and eventually we wouldn't hear a thing. But I figure it wouldn't have a "sound" but a "voice", and it would go like: "10 years to death - 5 years to death - 24 hours to death- 5 minutes to death - 4, 3, 2.....Houston, we have a problem"

It would make a tick tock sound.
Just like everything else - violence, war, tragedy - we would become deadened to the sound.

I'd say it does the opposite...because by the time you're 80+ years old...you lose a lot of your life...and it trickles AWAY (ie. hearing / brain / bodily functions / immune system / etc.)
