okay so i know i'm going to get responses about being a coward and sucking it up and crap like that. save your breath if that's all you have to offer, i need real answers. my best friend came home for a few days on emergency leave but didn't go back. that was nearly a month ago. they were miserable there, saw a counselor for depression and suicidal thoughts but wasn't put on medication because the dr didn't want to waste it on someone who didn't want to be there in the first place. my friend was a hold under and spent 2 weeks waiting for class to start, then got their mos changed but had to wait for new orders before they could be moved to the other battalion. after waiting a week they were told it could take another 2-3 weeks. that was when they just lost it, couldn't take being there anymore. problem is, now what do they do? i know people will say to go back, but do they have to go there? they don't know if the orders were ever changed, so who would be their co? any advice?

Bound's hubby here:

Bottom line, he has to go back. Yes, it is war time, but being AWOL (a lesser form of desertion), is not necessarily on ts own, punishable by death as some have said.

Too many years ago, when I was associated with the Army, I had a trainee in my company go AWOL ... they were escorted back under arms ... they did see Leavenworth for five long years. If he turns himself in, he may see less time.

The BIG problem is ... he did complete BASIC, so he is bound by his contract to serve. Had he not been able to complete his BASIC, his enlistment contract would have been nullified. How he handles this will affect his future. Needless to say, he is looking at a dishonorable discharge ... that will haunt him for the rest of his life.

now that he went AWOL, basically his orders are no longer important. there is a good chance he'll be slapped with either and article 15, dishonorably discharged, or worst case scenario, given some jail time. I'm not sure which, but, just givin a little heads up I'm not too sure what the article 15 means, my hubby mentions it a lot from knowing people who have done some really bad stupid stuff and got one, but I don't know what it is exactly. Maybe you could ask yahoo answers?! If he doesn't go back, I think for sure jail time, so I reccomend he go back to lighten the blow.

Your friend will have to go back THERE IS NO CHOISE. I know because I went through this with my husband. He/she will have to turn them self in! If they do not there will be a federal warrant put on them. Most likely they will be taken to fort Knox to "AWOL camp" and will be discharged. It is a three week process. They will make your friend feel worse then ever so you should try to find the # and call every day and talk to the SGT that are there. A warning though if you go AWOL from AWOL camp you are looking at hard time in a federal prison.
Your friend needs to turn them self in ASAP. This is war time and the consequences are dire for running!

Best of luck

I had an fool that did this to me while i grew to become into an AIT chief. We busted him in rank to E-one million, gave him MAX punishment below the UCMJ (field Grade Article 15) recycled him to the subsequent classification and he had to end the AIT on greater duty with out privileges. If he's in a wrestle provider and help AIT, the army can choose for to recycle him from that into the Infantry and that i wish they do. do no longer care if he discovered the army "isn't for him." while he signed the papers and shipped he made a call. Now he broke the regulation and could be dealt with like the criminal he's.

Your friend needs to turn himself into the local authorities, because AWOL is a federal offense, second he will need to get a jag, because chances are the command will court marshal, as far as his career in the military goes, it's finished and the army will not keep him because why keep an AIT student, and pass him to another command. Your friend will also show up in civilian back round checks, and there is a good chance that him finding a good job is out the window. First thing is first he needs to turn himself into the local police, because until he does he is a wanted felon.

If your friend has been gone more then 30 days it no longer AWOL its desertion punishable by imprisonment. The best thing to do is for your friend to go back and get discharged instead of waiting 5 years and getting pulled of for something and getting in way more trouble. Some units will allow them to continue in the military after some mental counseling and some will beet them right out. it all depends on the unit and how your friend geos about this thing. I was in the army and my husband still is and as son as he gets out in going back in and a girl from my unit was awol for 26 hours and her pay was stopped and when she came back she got kicked out and a guy in my husbands unit has been awol 3 times in 1 year and he is still active duty currently in iraq and they have no intentions of kicking him out.

One way or another, he has to go back and face the music. Yeah, like a toothache that will not go away, and the constant stress of wondering when they find him will not help him.
Hit the main gate with a full tummy and an empty prostate, and be ready to face a lot of angry people.
In the military, one m-u-s-t be able to depend on others in your unit, and breaking that is gonna cost him something.
He may or may not be allowed to stay in, but at least he won't be a fugitive any longer.
Sorry for the pain, but.

Yes he has to go back however he will go through a judicial system and I'm sure a psych eval will find your friend unfit for duty. I very highly doubt he will spend much time in his unit. He will probably be sent to the stockade while this is sorted out probably 1-2 months worth of waiting. If your really worried about this it would be in your friends best interest to get a lawyer that has military experience.

Tell your friend to call the Office of the Area Defense Counsel at your nearest Air Force installation and explain the situation. ADCs in the Air Force can talk to soldiers from any branch of the service and they do not work for anyone in the command structure, therefore they have no obligation to report your friend as AWOL. The ADC can advise your friend on the best course of action.

He will have to go back and probably face charges, but I doubt he will get a medical discharge because many of the guys in there have problems facing the fear every day. I only hope the guy who replaced him was some poop father with a few kids.
