As a service tech I put the car in first gear on a flat ground for safety, I feel that it is good practice for safety. a car can sometimes roil on what seems to be flat ground. And sometimes people have poor brakes.

If it was an automatic they would put it in park on any surface. They use 1st. on a manual transmission because it is much more difficult to move the car. Remember, if you need to push-start a car, it needs to be in high gear, because it is much easier to turn the engine over.

Do they.

I was always taught to leave cars in neutral, unless parked on a hill in which case to leave it in 1st gear facing up hill or reverse when facing down

i don't understand the context, yet once you needed to enhance the lower back of the motor vehicle up, you could not provide up the front wheels from moving via fact the hand brake purely brakes the lower back wheels. So the best undertaking is to chock the front wheels, yet as a double risk-free practices degree you could positioned the motor vehicle in kit to resign the wheels from turning. I easily do not have confidence a automobile whilst lifted up on the lower back and could do each risk-free practices degree achievable to evade it from moving by surprise.

i always put in reverse but the 1 st and reverse is the same gear just backwards, anyway it's for saftey reasons and if you put in first and the ignition starts the vehicle it can leap foward and crash into something before you know it, thats why my habit i put it in reverse!!!
