I do not understand this myself, but people get that adorable little puppy or kitten and when the cuteness wears off they get rid of it one way or another. I would rather see them in a shelter than dumped on a country road or a busy highway where their in high danger of getting ran over , or shot.
I would rather see people be more responsible and think about that free cute puppy growing up one day and still want to love it, but sadly this does not happen always.
I have devoted my life to strays. I have 2 horses that were unwanted and was going to go to slaughter because the people just did not want them anymore because they did not want to buy the hay for the winter.
I have a pot belly pig that was abandoned by a neighbor that just moved away and left it. After a month went by i knew that they werent coming back so i took it in, I just thank goodness i took it upon myself to feed it or it would of just starved to death.
I now have 15 dogs i take in and they are all unwanted and found dumped, starved almost to death or badly abused, now they are my babies and i will let them live out their lives with me.
If there were more responsible pet owners and less back yard breeders the over population of unwanted animals would lessen, but instead it just gets worse.
I am at my limit on being able to take anymore in, but i will as i will never let a poor animal starve if i see one that is.

I think most rescues don't let their dogs die & the ones that live at foster homes are usually pretty happy. They get top of the line vet care that they probably wouldn't have gotten with their original owners. I think rescue agencies are excellent, especially the ones that dedicate themselves to certain breeds so that people who want a purebred dog can go to them instead of a breeder.
As for how many live/die in shelters...I would check out the SPCA's website. I'm sure they would have plenty of statistics.
I think you are an everyday hero for adopting your dog from a rescue agency! Good for you.
Anytime I see someone on here asking for a puppy or a certain breed, I always encourage them to consider adoption thru a rescue shelter.

Many of the pets that wind up in the shelter are the results of irresponsible pet owners (NOT responsible breeders) who just let their dogs just run loose in the neighborhood and mate with any other dog running loose. If all dogs were confined - with fencing, on leashes, etc. AND if ALL dogs not in a responsible breeding program (with responsible breeders, I am not talking about backyard breeders who want to make a quick buck or people who think their dog is so cute and just want to find a male/female to breed "just a litter or two") were spayed/neutered, then there would be very few dogs in shelters.
Puppy mills are the exception and not the rule. The reason you hear so much about them is because they are sensational. They make good news stories. Yes, there are puppy mills out there, and yes, they are bad, but not all breeders are puppy mills. Once you get the purely "pets" spayed and neutered, then the animal control people can focus on the true puppy mills, then and only then, will homeless pets be a thing of the past. And responsible breeders can make sure centuries old breeds that are beautiful and majestic along with having a very rich and important history contiue to produce only the very best and most healthy animals.
As far as "letting" a dog run away, I do not know of anyone who "lets" their beloved pet run away - unless, they let them just run loose anyway.

Many pet owners are just irresponsible. They can barely take care of themselves much less a dog or cat. We have 3 dogs of which one was adopted from the shelter and the other two were dumped as puppies near our home. All we can do is feel sorry for both parties...the pet and the person who dumped them. I think it is all about education. People need to be taught responsibility.

After all of my years on this planet and all the things I've seen I've come to the conclusion that some people are just evil.
I know that some dogs run away and the owners are probably heart broken but after seeing dogs that have been chained to posts and abandoned, Dogs and cats that were tied in sacks and almost drowned, dogs that have been left out in the middle of no-where to survive or die on their own... I just can't make any more excuses for these people.
Some people are just evil.
Especially the *#@*%! that abandoned our last dog. She moved out of state and LOCKED her golden retriever inside the empty house without food or water. He eventually jumped out of the plate-glass window and escaped but he was traumatized for life.

dont forget some run pretty far. one time i found a dog running down the street, thankfully it had a collar, but it had come from 2 counties over and had been missing for 3 days. but yeah, there are a lot of people who just dont care. we went to a shelter and one of the reasons i've seen is that "it barks". no kidding!! we had a dog that would dig a new hole under the fence weekly just so she could go play in the stream a few blocks away. thankfully everyone learned to know her so they could bring her back to us when we didnt know she had gotten out. the first time she got out was within 15 minutes of being in her new fenced in yard, just took a flying leap and took off while we were inside. my other dog once snapped her leash and took off running towards the woods and i had to chase her on rollerblades down a ravine. that wasnt a fun day.

Far too many people buy a puppy on impulse without thinking things through. Then they expect the puppy to train itself. By the time it grows up they've discovered that a dog is a lot more trouble and work than they expected, so they get rid of it.

Allot of dogs end up i shelters because theres alot of selfish people out there.People will go get a dog and think that they dont have to do anything for it and when they see that there is work and money involved they get rid of them.I think its sick but thats how welfish some people can be.There is alot of good people out there to and some dogs do get lucky .The homeless dogs are always the best dogs to bring home because there stronger willed and will apprieciate you more.

Many people do not think of dogs as family, but as a disposable asset. Sad, but true.
My 3 dogs are all rescued dogs. Congrats to you for being so loving and opening your heart and your home to give these dogs a second chance at a happy life!!!

I don't understand that myself. I live in a rural area of our county and you would be shocked at the amount of people that just DROP off their animals. Dog and cats. At one time I was feeding 10 strays. People should really think long and hard before getting a pet.
