She is 26 years old and claims she has not had medication or therapy in years and was born with bi-polar. She uses her bi-polar as an excuse to be rude and mean to her kids and others. Is it possible to be bi-polar without medication or is she uses it as an excuse to be a witch?

I was wondering because she uses it as a reason to be rude and uncouth to people. If she trully is bipolar then would she use that as a reason to scare her kids or other people? Or is it something that most people are embarressed about exposing? I just don't feel its right to have someone use an illness to become the center of attention. I have often questioned her about this and she always has another excuse about it. I thank all of you for your responses.

Probably.

Most of the bipolar people I've known tend towards denial.

She is probably just a b___h.

Whatever the reason given (anything under the stars) - such behavior must be thwarted and checked especially where it involves harm to minors.

Assuming she is bipolar, she must take her medication religiously for the long haul. IF she is under medication, a marked improvement in her behavior should be evident.

In this case, what she may need is a thorough review of her heart (why she is so mean) and her attitudes.

Bipolar without medication? Very risky. The worst case scenario there is severe depression and suicide. Some famous bipolars are: Ernest Hemingway and Virginia Woolf - both of whom were successful in their suicide attempts.

Many individuals diagnosed and properly treated actually lead productive lives.

When I was 1st diagnosed (at age 22. It normally has an adult onset) I decided that what had occured was a nervous breakdown and I was not bipolar and did not need medication. I got away with it for a year before I had another manic episode with psychotic features. Ever since, I take my medicine (in fact, I just took some) without fail. If your neighbor is claiming she was born with this disorder but chooses to go without medication, she is most likely feeding you a load of crap. I would say she is using it as an excuse to allow her to act as she pleases. Meanwhile, she is giving me a bad name. I pop a lot of pills to make sure I'm not rude or uncouth.....effing biatch

people that truely have BI-Polar almost never broadcast that they have it, an aspect of the disorder is a need for privacy
Bi-Polar is when you have manic episodes followed by depressive episodes, rude isn't one of the symptoms
other people that are psychotic, go around wearing the newest disorder like a badge, this makes their doctor very happy because this is how the pharmaceutical companies stay in business, the doctor gives patients samples, or the medication is subsidized for people who can't afford it, if she really is bi-polar/psychotic and quit taking her meds and therapy call the local department of children and family welfare and report her, the children will be taken to a safe house and protected from her

Bi-polar generally surfaces in your teens, I have not met a person with Bi-polar that can live productively without meds. Not that some may have. just talking from my experiences. It depends, She may or may not, Usually your hypo or hypermanic, and your mood changes in a .0001seconds. If she just rude all the time that's manners, She may be telling the truth. but I would question it.

And bi-polar is not a made up disease. trust me.

If she was really bi-polar you would know. Not only does she go through her manic phases but she will also be depressed as well. The variations between the two are not like your average person and you will notice extreme behavior that you wouldn't have to question. The fact that you are asking it makes me believe that she is lying. I think she is probably just a lying and rude.

Bi-Polar could be a polar bear that swings both ways..No, now on a serious note. A lot of people who can't deal with the stresses of life tend to self diagnose and use their finding as an excuse for their unacceptable behavoir..She sounds like a nutjob. If she was really bi-polar she wouldn't be announcing it to her neighbors ..It would be her little secret and she would be under the care of a qualified mental health provider. She is probally just looking for sympathy.. A lot of people fake disabilities both mental and physical just to get others to feel sorry for them and also to get that monthly disability from the Social Security Administration...I know several people who pull this scam every month and it makes me angry to no end as my late husband was genuienly ill and couldn't get any assistance from the goverment for his much needed health care..
Just ignore the neighbor and let her stew in her own misery.

She could be bi polar and not bad enough to get medication. She also may be using medication and it doesnt work for her. And a normal person wouldnt brag about having it if they really did.

If she were truely bi-polar she wouldn't just be witchy. Those with the disorder have severe mood swings. When they are up they are super happy/hyper, and when they are down they can hardly get out of bed. It sounds like she's just a dramatic b*tch

Bi-polar people almost are like two different people in one body, like split personality.

They could be the nicest people when they are ok, however, they tend to "switch" personalities when they get stressed or when things are not going their way. It is a neurological desorder and should not be taken lightly. They are mostly verbally abusive, however, they can get physical.

It is not uncommon for them to deny treatment, they do need a lot of talking and in some cases, something has to happen for them to take action.

I am not sure how close you are to your neighbor but she does need medication and will probably need to take them for the rest of her life.
