get your cat to the vet. there may be a medical reason for this. after that clean all the areas that your cat messed with nature's miracle.
if after that your cat still isn't using the litterbox it's time to retrain, you need to lock your cat in a small room with it's litterbox and some water. and your cat will learn that it will have to use the litterbox or have to live in the mess and cats don't like to live in mess.

My friend has this problem .. and still wont listen to advice.. What type of litter are u using.. if its the clay type.. ( or heavy type ) then when u clean it the smell is still there. get one that hides odors
Try what u call Clumping litter or light weight... it might be a bit more expensive...and clean the tray every time it needs it. Some cats are just very fussy.
You will need to really clean the spot on the carpet cuz that's now the toilet too.

There could be multiple reasons why. if you have changed your brand of litter he may just not like that kind. If the litter box is in a dark area at night with no light he may not use it because he can not see it. or if it is in an area like by a furnace when it kicks on he may be frightened of the noise and chooses carpet over the box. Maybe the litter box is too close in proximity to his food dish, or even he dose not want to use it if it is dirty even just a little dirty. simply put he may not like the location or may not like the brand of litter you are using. when you clean up the carpet make sure you are using a cleaning product that dose not contain ammonia and neutralizes the ammonia to keep him from thinking it is another cat.
keep the cat faith and good luck..

It could be a medical problem. But if not, many cats use peeing as a form of protest. Have you changed anything in your house or lifestyle? It took my old cat a week to stop peeing on the rug after I moved house (from Germany back to the States) and then there was a slight mishap when our boxes finally arrived. He just didn't like the change. Now that things have settled he is using his litter box again.

Well, for starters, it could be that you're not cleaning out the litter box often enough. Or maybe you've switched brands of litter? Cat Fancy magazine says you should have 2 boxes for every cat you have. It could also be that she's upset about something or maybe sick. Ask your vet.

Creatures of habit! You must make sure that NO odor remains on the 'accident' spots. Clean these areas well with white vinegar . Make sure kitty's box is clean-sometimes their standards are much higher than ours- and available[can't use the box if the door is closed!] Be sure there are no stress factors involved,ie. new people in the household,a move- and no health problems. Sometimes kidney/urinary tract diseases will cause kitty to void indiscriminatly. Good luck.

Pets are like toddlers, you train them. Meantime, they need "guidelines" (use house gates) , their activities zone; keep them away from litter box , beds, sofa and carpets.

Cats are particular...if the box isn't clean enough or if you changed its litter, it may rebel and go anywhere. If its urine, then it may be marking its territory.

Your cat might have a urinary problem and can't hold it or doesn't realize it. If you are sure he is house trained you might want to take him to a vet if it continues.
