It Teaches us we cannot save ourselves. That we cannot live by works. That even with a Divine Law, we cannot live right. That our Righteousness is filthy rags compared to God's. That it takes Jesus to make us Righteous.

To bring us to Christ... actually a rather poor translation of the original. Here is a more accurate version:
Gal 3:24 So the law was put in charge until Christ came. He came so that we might be made right with God by believing in Christ. 25 But now faith in Christ has come. So we are no longer under the control of the law.
There is a clear way for the Greek to have said what the kjv translators wrote, but that is not what was in the text.

It isn't the +Bible+ that is called schoolmaster:
See Gal 3
23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. 24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.
It is the _law_ that is called our schoolmaster. Not that Christ has released us from sin, we are no longer subject to the law, that law having been fufilled. We now exist solely under the state of grace.

The law provided the structure and discipline we needed, until Christ could come, give us some necessary practical tips, and grant us freedom.
Now, under the new covenant, we're like children who have completed our course of studies, learned our lessons, graduated, and been given the freedom to go out into the world and change it, for Christ.

What fun, a contest!
"Law" helps us to learn guidelines to follow in life. As at school we learn rules and techniques to apply in life, we must use the law to find our path in life. It is to be a guide on our path to righteousness.
