The hardness of our bones depends on a good level of calcium being laid down in them - which is why we need calcium in our diets and vitamin D to absorb it into our systems.
The levels of calcium in the skeleton are being added to all the time in this way.
Other things cause calcium to leak out of the skeleton - things like heredity, extreme thinness, certain illnesses, medications and treatments among others.
If more calcium is being leaked out than is being laid down, the bones become thinner or more brittle - i.e. less dense.
The loss of calcium, and therefore hardness, from the bones is measured using a dexa scanner. This is a special scanner, not the same as an x-ray or bone scan. It gives a good indication whether the bones are hard (normal density), somewhat weaker than normal (Osteopenia) or a lot weaker than expected (Osteoporosis).
Depending on what the scan shows, appropriate medication will be prescribed by your doctors as needed, or if needed.
The treatment all depends on how much and how quickly the calcium is leaking from the bones, and will try both to hold existing calcium in the bones for longer as well as add extra calcium into the bones.
The main problem with this condition is that the risk of suffering a fracture from a simple fall is increased, that is a risk you will have to discuss with your son's doctors to see how significant a risk it is in his case.
Hope this helps.
