I can understand why people living in the dark ages believed in magic. Why does 95 % of the population still believe in it today? Is the fear of death being the end that much of a motivator?

Because they were much closer to perfection, but they were still imperfect.

What makes you think that modern man is smarter than anyone who came before? Thousands of years ago, people had time to think and consider the more difficult and time consuming questions in life. Today, we are inundated with TV, Radio, Internet, and all sorts of other distractions. We no longer take the time to think for ourselves. As a result, we believe the loudest voice we hear. Generally this is the materialistic view of the Advertiser, whose only purpose in life is to get money out of your pocket. But in the process, he tells you that you only go around once in life, so go for the 'gusto'. Live for today. Don't worry about what you can't see.

Can you really trust people like that?

Why do 95% of the population still believe in religion? I suppose it's because of the overwhelming evidence in thier lives. What excuse do the other 5% have?

Why would you think people living thousands of years ago would be inherently less wise?

The reason there are still believers is because there are still people that encounter God. I'm sorry that you haven't had that experience. You won't convince anyone who has had that expereince that they are crazy or stupid. Just because you can't understand something doesn't make it false. Did you ever stop and think that perhaps you're the odd man out?

What makes people today think that people living now are wiser than people living thousands of years ago?

People of the Judeo-Christian Faiths had the Divine Revelation given to them thousands of years ago.

Just because human "knowledge" is doubling every 16 months now, what makes people think they are any wiser than their ancestors were many generations ago?

Because they wish they could kill their neighbors, sleep with their daughters and sisters, dress in funny clothes and leave all the deciding to a single person, that way they don't have to worry about it. We're not any wiser or any better than they were thousands of years ago... but at least we're not killing babies in wars and we don't have a king that does what he wants... and we don't believe in "prophets" that tell us how to live our lives... RIGHT?

I think that religion gives people what they desire most, a sense of belonging and community. I also think that the vast majority had no real choice, because they have been indoctrinated into their religion form a very early age, essentially brainwashed.
While I think that most churches are well meaning and do good, I think its important to remember that for the most part they are based on fantasy.

People never really change, and neither does God.

What was true then is still true now.

Who wouldn't want to overcome death? Death has always been the enemy.

What other, or better choice do you have?

I don't believe in magic, Buddhism is a science of the mind...

"Believe nothing.
No matter where you read it,
Or who said it,
Even if I have said it,
Unless it agrees with your own reason
And your own common sense"

Maybe because they did not have all the outside influence to direct their thoughts. No computers, telephones or so called educated people who know more than the elders.
