That's your choice. You can do one of three things:
1. Go to court, plead guilt, pay a fine and have a point accessed to your driving record, Your insurance carrier may or may not raise your premium at your next renewal.
2. Go to court, plead NOT guilty. The court will set a trial date when you return for trial. If the Police Officer does NOT appear the case is dismissed (it never happened). If the Police Officer does appear, 999 times out of 1000, you will be found guilty. You will have lost two days pay for having been in court two times, and you will pay a fine and have points accessed to your driving record.
3. You can request "Traffic School" ( you may do this once every 18 months to five years, depending on what your particular court allows.), The court will give you a list of approved methods to comply with this request. You will pay a modest fee for the school, and upon completion of school, and filing the certification with the court your case will be dismissed. The court may or may not access you a fee to cover their costs. No points will be accessed to your driving record, Your Insurance premiums will not be affected. (Note: If you are a professional driver you can no longer attend Traffic School.)

if you have not been to traffic school for at least two years, and you recieve a traffic ticket, they you have the option to take traffic school to get the ticket off your record (for insurance purposes). i think this is true of almost any state though.

You can pay the fine, argue not guilty then pay the fine, or go to traffic school and keep it, your first violation, off your record.
