While questioning the atheists, this image struck me as an explanation for why so many religions exist, seemingly in disagreement with one another.

Each mirror in the House of Mirrors distorts the original image, yet they all reflect something that truly, objectively, exists.

I agree with you. Very astute observation.

Sure, it's possible there was a giant building full of mirrors and God invited a bunch of people but allowed each one only to look at his reflection in a different mirror. It's also possible he didn't exist.
If you want that idea to be taken seriously you'll have to explain what the mirrors represent.

Life itself is a House of Mirrors in my humble opinion. This is evidenced in so many ways but for clarity, I will mention only one.

There is a car accident. 20 people witness it. The police question everyone and receive 20 different eye-witness accounts.

Remember. No matter what you do, what you believe, or what you say, ALL of it is filtered through your personal perception; through your limited five senses.

Is it any wonder that humans have so many different interpretations of what we think is divine?

Yes, religions represent the social contract that we all agree to, to function as a society. The details of this social contract are based on a number of factors, most of them geographic. Every animal on the face of the planet has a similar contract. That's how birds of a feather... flock together.

The reason there are so many religions is the extreme lack of any gods to set anybody straight, and the extreme lack of evidence to support any one view over another.

It's possible, but until we know what that perfect image of a religion is, we should not follow any of them.

An intersting take from a philosphical aspect. It is new to me.
