Because he is 500 years old.. and only does cardio. He doesn't do any resistance training or toning.. he just jumps around and does cardio.

The human body likes to build up a supply of energy (fat) to be used in times of less abundant food. We no longer live in a condition where famine is likely, and the overabundance of food can mean that this survival mechanism still happens, but there's never a shortage of food for it to be used. Hence, reducing diets are used to simulate famine, and the weight can be lost.
However, it's a vicious cycle, as your body gets feedback that the storage of fat is still necessary, it will become even more efficient at it, so if you gain back the weight (and over 90% of people do), you'll also put some extra back on on top of the weight you lost.
He's been through so many cycles of weight loss and regain that his body has become really good at storing fat. His emphasis more recently has been on gaining health, rather than losing weight for losing weight's sake. This is a healthier approach, and likelier to be more successful in the long run. A fat body can be healthy, if you work at it.

The causes of a fat body are not simple (except to the simple minded). A lot has to do with individual body chemistry, how one was treated as a child, and natural inclinations.
It has been a great survival tool for millions of years to be able to produce and store fat. It is the recent excess of food, and of modified foods, that has caused a lot of problems. That and the fact that it is now understood that being overweight is an early manifestation of diabetes which is probably communicable in some way.
Since being fat is the result of genetics that assure survival, people who tend naturally to be thin are in possession of recessive traits. These are often concentrated in populations that inbreed.
So if you are plump, don't let some skinny dude lord it over you just because his family has a long history of incest.

Richard Simmons grew up in the French Quarter of New Orleans, where lard was a food group and dessert mandatory, Richard was 268 pounds when he graduated high school. He sold pralines on New Orleans street corners...after trying everything from bizarre diets to laxatives, Simmons took control of his weight problem by adopting a lifestyle of balance, moderate eating and exercise...weighing in at 185, he's still fighting the fitness battle.

Well I'm sure his attitude (unlike yours) will encourage people to actually do something about their weight. And anyone who can do that, I take my hat off too. Maybe you should get a clue, this guy lost over 100lb, he has struggled with his weight all his life, I'd like to see you have the same determination and motivation in the things you do. All you appear to know is how to be judgemental and critical of someone that is actually doing something useful, whilst you sit on your lazy backside and keep winging!

He is overweight but not morbidly obese, as in people that can't walk fifty feet without wheezing and sweating.
His videos are geared towards encouraging SEVERELY overweight people to exercise, and probably that audience is going to like and trust more a guy who is kind of pudgy than some bulimic chick with 6% bodyfat.

He doesn't seem to be particularly overweight today, although he used to be remarkably heavy years ago. He lost alot of weight, he can speak from personal experience and that often goes a long way with people who want to make life changes.
