Can someone please explain to me how a person can delete his/her ICQ number and remove it completely from the ICQ system? Whenever I ask the personnel at ICQ about this, they only tell me that the option to delete a number is currently unavailable.

Uninstall ICQ first and then reinstall it. During setup select that you do not currently have an ICQ number and would like a new one, and your old number won't show up again. This works for the software only.
As far as the system, you can't delete the number because in reality you don't own it. However, you can delete all the information linked to it by editing your main ICQ profile.

it would be somewhere on the main ICQ page. try clickin on help and type in how to delete your account? you will have to delete.. if you try and it wont let you. then you must dl it again. and again try to delete. after that you must restart.. and your all gone

well... the option is curently unavailable! No really... you can't... I check my number after 8 years and it was already there!!! You can delete ALL the information linked to the number

I hope not. If they do I wont use their home page or mail which will upset alot of their advertisers once they find that out.
