Is this attributable to the wide use of slang, shortcuts used in e-mailing and text messaging, or has our society just gotten very sloppy with our language? Is there any other possible explanations. There our many times I cannot understand what some groups of people are even saying or talking about when they speak, and yes they are speaking English, I think.

I'm completely with you, and I do think that the increase in informal communication (texting, e-mailing, et al.) has contributed to it. But even before this, our verbal communication was pretty sloppy.
I think one problem is that there are so many rules (I'm no dummy, but I still get tripped up on 'that' vs. 'which'). And I think THAT problem gives rise to another one -- grade school teachers telling young writers not to concern themselves too much with mechanics and to just focus on getting the idea out. (Surely, I wasn't the only one who went to a school where they did that?) If, from an early age, our main concern is ensuring that people get the gist of what we're saying, then we might never bother with structural rules as we get older.

i think of you could quite thank the ordinary public coaching gadget for the state of grammar presently. in spite of the indisputable fact that i don't have young ones, I vote at a interior sight undemanding college. on an identical time as waiting in line in the process the main contemporary elections, I got here approximately to ascertain the diverse essays written by making use of the third and 4th grade instructions. for particular it grew to become into glaring that the college emphasised phonetic studying. so a techniques as i will tell, it incredibly would not rely in case you spelled the words wisely as long as you have been close. that's a shame that the babies of the following day will in result have been given a eco-friendly gentle to illiteracy. that isn't any ask your self that remedial instructions in college have not have been given any scarcity of scholars.

I think we've just gotten sloppy. Most people don't seem to care anymore. Perhaps grammar and spelling aren't emphasized in schools as much as they used to be. I've known people who actually say:"What's the difference, as long as people know what I mean?" I think it's sad--our near illiteracy is making us look bad to the rest of the world.

All your points are valid but I think you forget plain laziness. Laziness to spell correctly, laziness to check if the spelling of the word is correct. Laziness to learn new words, laziness to find meanings of words and phrases.

Although English is the language we communicate in, the same applies if we spoke in another language, we need to study the language we use, make an effort to use the correct grammar and spelling.
It's basic decency.

What is the grammar? We created the language to communicate. After that, we've defined the grammar to explain the structure of it.

We never follow the grammar. The language is proceeding and changing. The grammar always comes after.

Sure there are lots of explanations Jet, and you named some. Hey, I blame news media, too. They now use chopped sentences and abbreviations in the tv text, plus they rarely use proper names. So how are the younger generations to know what real English is???

People are lazy and just follow the least difficult way without thinking that it may be incorrect grammar.

All of your reasons are plausable. Plus, when you use a word enough (even slang) they seem to think it's okay to put in a dictionary.

Your question is a good example..."ARE there any other possible explanations", for instance.
I don't think most people care, unfortunately, although I give you props for trying!

Listen to some of the music, (if you can call it that), on the radio and I think you'll have the best answer to your question.
