I have anxiety attacks when I'm in a situation that makes me nervous. My track meets for example. Track meets make everyone nervous, but mine are actual anxiety attacks...I shake, cry, worry constantly, it's crazy... What should I do about this?

I also have an anxiety disorder so I know how you feel. The best way to combat it is congnative thinking...essentially re-learning how to think so instead of being worried about something you just go with is. MEDS ARE NOT THE ANSWER (commenting on the first person to respond) meds will only temporarily make you feel better...once you are off the meds, chances are you will go back to the way you were. I used a program called Attacking Anxiety and Depression by Lucinda Basset (www.stresscenter.com) has helped me tremendously. You can read some of her books or find a therapist who will do cognative thinking with you. Best of luck to you sweety.

First thing I would recommend as a clinician is to see your primary care for a referral (if needed) to see a Psychologist and/or Psychiatrist. Anxiety can lead to great amounts of distress, and the most successful way of alleviating it depends on the person. For some, immediate relief comes in the form of medication, for others cogntive restructuring with a Psychologist can have great advantages. Medication may provide you with immediate relief, however, anxiety in particular is chronic, and may wax and wane over the course of an individual's lifespan. The best advice I can give is to consult a Psychologist and a Psychiatrist. These two professionals have the best professional experience compared to your primary care physician. Social Workers are also helpful, but generally lack the intricate training that a Psychologist or Psychiatrist can provide you with. Hope this helps!

I have anxiety issues as well especially in social situations ..I think if you are experiencing shake crying and worrying you should see an doctor there are several levels of anxiety and that sounds pretty bad after they evaluate you they may prescribed meds ..good luck I know how bad this sucks

As many people have several different forms of panic attack disorders there is many many ways to resolve them. From what you have said yours is somewhat severe. If you dont agree in taking medication for your anxiety disorder you can try other methods in helping ease this problem. I myself have a panic disorder and I choose not to take medication. What I do is try to relax as much as possible. You can try breathing methods, yoga,stretching, taking a shower/bath, talk to yourself with confidents in your head. You can calm yourself down by doing some of these. If you are not able to control it may have to take medication for some ease. Medication does help..but it will also make you feel very tired and groggy. You may want to take med. for acouple of months just until your body gets use to not panicing so much but in the mean while go for walks stretch your body..get your mind clear of any negative thoughts.

Anxiety attacks, or panic attacks are serious. Certain situations bring them on. You need meds, go see a Dr. for help. I have panic disorder and even with the meds I still get them from time to time. It's a tough road to travel. But it will lesson them. Good luck and God speed. I hope you get better.

Try some deep breathing exercises. Concentrate on the breathing exercise rather than the events of the track meet.
Use positive imagery to see yourself through the situation with a positive result (like personal best time, etc,) Quit worrying... your preparation will see you through.... imagine the best happening, not the worst. Force yourself to think about positive results. See a therapist if it continues.

a freind had anxiety attacks so bad his chest hurt and he thought he was having heart attacks. See your doctor, describe in detail the severity of your attacks. He can perscribe medication that will help, or direct you to a specialist.

Ask your doctor about Xanax. I am currently tasking this medication and it works well. Out of all of the anti anxiety medicines I have taken, the side effects of Xanax are mild compared to others. The one side effect that I enjoy about Xanax is the drowsiness. Finally, I am more relaxed and getting more sleep!

Don't see a doctor, see a psychiatrist. Trust me. I worked with my psychiatrist for about a year, and I can handle my anxiety now without medication.
