are British "Bobbies" starting to rethink their "no guns" policy? or am i behind times, are the cops armed??

UK police officers are NOT routinely armed with guns and, in the forseeable future, will not be. It would cause more problems than it would solve.

However, in these changing and increasingly dangerous times, more specialist officers are regularly to be seen in high profile locations carrying guns.

Of the 30,000+ London officers, only a small percentage are trained in the use of firearms.

There are, obviously, armed police units, but the average bobby on the street is not armed, and that is the way it should stay! Incidents of police deaths are very rare, so I don't think it's an issue of self-defence. Having all police routinely armed will increase fatal shootings that could have been avoided, and it makes them less approachable.

I don't think terrorism is a problem either, the police they station outside of the tubes when there's been some sort of scare are always armed, and not even subtle! Besides, look at that poor Brazilian bloke!

I can't imagine being a cop without a gun - I have to draw mine fairly often - there's a lot of nuts out there who just don't give a damn who they hurt - what do these guys do if buddy pulls a knife on them? Just get stabbed and die? Action is always faster than reaction - but reacting with a gun is going to beat reacting with an impact weapon or whatever the Bobbies get to carry...like they say, don't bring a knife to a gun fight...or a billy club...

Thank god! every time an armed British policeman turns up, somebody gets shot by them, usually fatal.

No, most aren't armed, some are, but there are many who are pushing for it and being turned down.
