He's not into sports, he doesn't wear ties so I really dont know what to get for him or what to do. I want to do a little something to show him that we do appreciate him. Any ideas?

A card is the best thought. A cake would be ok, but you might get roped into baking cakes for everyone. Cards give recognition to the birthday without that whole gift thing tied to it. You do not want to start a gift-giving thing in your office because it gets to be expensive and stressful.

Your best bet is to have everyone chip in a couple of dollars and buy a cake. Don't bother with gifts because in a work environment that might seem a little questionable. If you buy him a gift now and in the future something goes your way that someone else wanted then they can claim that you got some favoritism because of a gift that you bought EVEN if the gift played no part in it.

you should simply give a card or e-card. You don't wanna make it seem as if you are "sucking up to the boss", or that you are trying to make advantages toward him. If the card is okay then next year you will know its okay to give a real gift. You don't wanna violate any polices or anything like that or make him feel uncomfortable, or worse make him think you like him and he then tried to "start something up". Please do not bring a cake into work that is something that you should do on your birthday to share with everyone else.

word of caution: don't do all this preparation by yourself, he might get the wrong idea. get the guys to chip in. then use the money you collected to get a cake for everyone in the office to share. that way it won't seem too personal. if no one wants to chip in, get a simple card and get everyone in the office to sign it. that way, it won't seem too personal and it'll show everyone remembered his b-day even if the others had no clue.

I worked in a small office years ago & we always purchased a cake for each other (no matter whose birthday)...so...I'd say a cake is a really nice gesture & a funny card.

Buy him a card, have everybody sign it.

For alot of people, just knowing that people recognized it was your birthday is better than getting a bunch of gifts you might not use.

Have everyone in the office chip in and take him to lunch on the Friday before his Bday.

Why not club together with workmates to get him a brown nose from your local joke shop?
