Trust me. Just don't go there!

Just read some of the other answers. In England, it comes in a tin and occasionally from the deli counter and it is already cooked until it resembles the skin on the shins of a fat, white woman who has stood too close to the fire.

In the North of England, where I live now, they use it to prepare a cooked arrangement known as corned beef hash. No idea! I couldn't ever get that hungry.

It is easy to make your own corned beef at home. Just plan ahead. The beef brisket will take about 1 week to cure. You can also use bottom round roast in place of brisket, if you wish.
INGREDIENTS:
4 quarts water
1 cup salt
1 teaspoon saltpeter (see note 1 below)
2 beef briskets, about 4 pounds each (see note 2 below)
12 garlic cloves
3 tablespoons pickling spices
8 bay leaves
PREPARATION:
Boil water. Add salt and saltpeter, stir to dissolve and set aside to cool. Place brisket in a large crock, zipper-style plastic bag or other non-metallic container.
Pour salt water over meat and add garlic, pickling spices and bay leaves. Meat should be submerged; use a weighted jar to hold meat under pickling solution. Refrigerate or set in a cool place for 1 week Drain and remove bay leaves before cooking.

Note 1: Saltpeter is known commercially as potassium nitrate and is used to give the meat a pink coloring.

Note 2: Bottom round roasts may be substituted for the brisket for a leaner corned beef.

Wikipedia says "Corned beef is beef that is first pickled in brine and then cooked by simmering. Usually, cuts of meat are used that feature long muscle grain, such as the brisket.

The name corned beef is due to a coarse salt used in the pickling process. Corn originally meant grain, as in a small particle of something, and referred to the corns of salt."

Personally, I can handle it about once a year. It's good that once a year though.

Nothing like that is in corned beef. Corned beef is usually some sort of brisket cut of beef that is pickled in brine, usually with peppercorns.

We like corned beef roasted instead of the traditional boiling. It's delicious.

it is nothing more than regular beef that has been pickled in a brine solution...that is what give it the red color..and it is cooked even more with a pickling spice to get tender...it is a great piece of meat a lot of things can bne prepared...rueben sandwiches,corned beef and cabbage..............new england boiled dinner

Cooked and then preserved or pickled in salt or brine.

They do stick a load of grotty bits in to some sausages and burgers, so it is a possibility.

it's mushed up beef+corn(the white bits are fat-uuugh)
