My dog is two years old and every winter due to the dry season he becomes uncontrollably itchy. He is on medication with fish oil in it and his food contains salmon. Im looking for a topical lotion (he hates sprays) or suggestions on shampoos.

Several of my dogs had a bad itching problem as well. I called the vet to see if there was anything I could do for them to help with the itching. She said that I could use benadryl(yes the kind we take for allergies). I can't remember just how much she said to give according to body weight, its been so long. But it really helps. If you decide to use this, then I would call a vet and ask just how much to give according to body weight. It does help though.

Tea tree oil works WONDERS! It's a natural product found in a lot of people OTC itch relief products, and I've used it on my dogs for years. It really helps control their dry, itchy, winter skin problems, plus it smells nice.

Shampooing usually just makes it worse, I have a Pit, when she gets itchy I put cornstarch on her and brush her with a horse brush ,she likes it. If your dog has a long coat I'm not sure how this will work?

Dry skin, is easily fixed by giving your dog oils, like tuna oil in there food, this helps there coats immensely..fish oil, that is unless they have an infection on there skin, Don't stop with the oil it does work..

I use Benedryl Elixor. Ask someone for dosage amounts. The shots that are given about every 3 months run around $85. But, they work.

Try a hypoallergenic oatmeal shampoo and reduce the number of baths. The brand of food he eats could be another reason for skin issues.
