Well, according to the Mayans, the end of the world is in 2012, so...2008 when the next dictator-I mean "president" is "elected".

It could be 28 minutes from now or 280 years from now. When the superpowers square off against each other in two camps, then come back and we'll talk WW III.
Until then, just think regional conflicts, wars between rump states, proxy wars and brinksmanship. If you recall the Yom Kippur War in 1973, a coalition of Arab States (Egypt, Syria and Jordan) were soundly defeated by the Israelis. That was a worse situation than the current conflict and it didn't raise a blip on the world war radar (not that it didn't have the potential to spark a global war).
The next World War will involve a nuclear exchange, how could it not. In the first 30 minutes, nearly a billion people will have been vaporised, mostly in the US, Russia, Europe, China and Japan. Another 1.5 billion will die shortly thereafter from radiation poisoning. The northern hemisphere will be plunged into prolonged agony and barbarity.
Eventually the nuclear winter will spread to the southern hemisphere and all plant life will die. You ask when world war three will start, you are asking when will we commit global suicide. My answer is it won't happen soon because the larger superpowers are more rational than the rump states in the middle east.
Our biggest risk is an accidental launch of nukes by one of the nuclear powers.

Its simple mathematics. We need to back-calculate from the area affected by a single average Nuke. Then who has them and how many and what it takes to irritate them so much.
USA, China and Russia have the advantage when it comes to both area and number of nukes. So there's no WW III unless these three want to have it. So basically not in the next 50 years.
Even if the most militant of the Islamic groups get hold of a few nukes, the damage inflicted on the west is not worth the response they will have to face. And they know that. So they will only wage a proxy war till they can match the military might of the West but its more like an asymptote as the West wouldl keep adding things to its shelf. There will be many wars, of smaller scale I mean, in the middle-east and Africa, but no WW III in the next 50 years.

We are in it now. Islamic fundamentalism is fighting every religion from the Philippines to America. They have concentrated their forces in Iraq and Afghanistan right now in an effort to defeat America politically. The only power that can stop them. Once they force the US out they will have free reign as Bin Laden said, "the world will be an open field for us" Africa and Western Europe will become Islamic by forced conversion through terror and political weakness. . They will have control of ICBM`s from Pakistan, France, Iran, and possibly England. They won`t be afraid to use them. Christian vs Muslim will only be a side show as America will be politically unable to do anything after Iraq.
This Bin Laden and the other fundamentalist are counting on. It is not really about Islam, that is only an excuse, it is about power.

We won't know until years after it is passed. Soldiers in WW1 called it the war to end all wars, afterward they called it the great war it wasn't until after WW2 that they renamed them both. We may look back from 2054 and say that 2001 until 2015 was the period known as WW3 during which militant Islam was eradicated and the world has been happier ever since. Or we may look back from the shambles of civilization and wonder who released the superflu and wiped out 95% of the people. It won't go nuclear and militant islam doesn't have to resources to win a conventional fight.

World War 3 was the Cold War, we're in World War 4 right now, the war against Global Terrorism. Countries have been declaring war on each other for all of written history; what's new about today, except hearing about it faster?

well, i saw a programe on british tv the other day which basically exposed the fact the religious crowd state side have direct access to the white house, and are pushing for ww3 ASAP as they want to see the second coming of christ.... and it looks like this is the policy being persued. they don't give a toss that millions will die... and fully expect it to be nuclear!!!
with this in mind, i'd say that it should come to a head before bush leaves office, (elections in 2009 i believe, but could be wrong) as these religious fanatics are going to want to take full advantage of the polical power they have at the moment, and they know it will be gone with bush.
it is interesting to note that a prophecy of white house residents (so far true in it's context) predicts that the next and last incumbant will be democrat. i doubt the fanatics are unaware of this.

You don't understand. WWIII began five years ago. This war isn't being fought like WWII, though. like you said, it is also a religious war. Nobody actually knows how to fight this new kind of war, so it'll be protracted, and not as obvious as the two before it. But it really is a world war. The muslim radicals have seen to that. America is just working to focus their attention in Iraq. So far it's worked well. But it ain't over yet.
