so please no answers about how it would never happen. If we said that we would make illegal immigrants legal if they gave a 5 to 10 minute speech in ENGLISH giving 3-5 valid reasons why they deserve it:

1. What percentage do you think would do well enough to be granted citizenship?
2. Do you think they many of them would be able to come up with more than 2 reasons? What are some things they might say?
3. (This may be racist, but who cares?) Do you think any race/ethnic group would do better than others?

1. given at least a few weeks to practice before they had to do it, probably 90-95% would be able to do it. They'd be very motivated to learn a short speech in English :)
2. I think they'd all come up with 3-5 valid reasons. Some ideas? I can earn a better living here. I can be free from persecution in my homeland. This is the best country in the world and I want to live here. I feel safe in the US, there was so much crime/war/violence in my homeland. It's always been my dream to live in America. Lots more...
3. Of course, people from countries where they already speak English would have an advantage! And yes, there ARE illegal immigrants here from England, Ireland, African countries where English is spoken, etc. Not all illegals speak Spanish natively. People who had been here longer would also have an advantage, as they would have had time to learn some English and learn more about the US.

1. 50%, the other 50% would have someone write it for them and just recite it.
2. Following reasons could be possible.
1) Americans are lazy
2) Americans don't have enough babies( I have actually heard that one, seriously.)
3) Americans are all racist
4) The price of spinach will go up
5) We are not criminals(even though a third of the prison popualtion is illegal)
6) The borders crossed us.
7) You cheated us out of this land.

3. I think it depends on the individual, really. In my eyes, if you broke the law, and then insulted my country, you are less than dirt.

I work in an area that is full of legal and illegal immigrants of all kinds. Many are taking classes to become citizens. The classes are always full even when these people work two or three jobs in addition. the E.S.L. classes which i volunteer for, are always full as well, and before some smart rear chimes in, they pay for these lessons out of their own pocket.
They will have the same reasons most of our ancestors did.
I have worked with many races and the ones that have had the most difficulty have been Asian and Arabic just because of the origination of their language and how different it is compared to English.

1. 70-75%
2. I think they could. Some of the reasons: to have a better life, to raise their kids, to learn English, to get away from problems in their country...
3. No, I don't. Though obviously people that speak fluent English(such as Europeans, Canadians, and Australians) will do better than those those learned it as a second language.

It isn't nearly a sufficient requirement, and given the same time in this country, orientals and Europeans would likely do better, and people from one time British colonies, where English is learned.

It would be a shoo-in for Canada and other English speaking countries, of course.

I'm against amnesty. I don't think it's the right answer, I think it encourages others to 'try their luck'. We're 20 years past the point when Congress said they'd deal with this. Better late than never, I guess! LOLOL
