It's funny, I've run across this before. Someone pointed me out to a post from a protestant minister on some public message board a while back where he made some flatly false claim about how all unbelievers really wanted to believe, etc. etc.
So I figured I'd write him and correct his misperception. Big mistake. He'd start out every exchange by saying how he believed ME and respected my choice not to believe, but I was obviously an exception, that it really WAS true that nonbelievers all secretly wanted god, and ... so didn't I too? Huh? Huh? Really? Deep down? Yes? Right? Huh?
After about 3 or 4 letters of this escalating from the subtle to the blatant, it got to the point where he told me literally that god had told him this, and brought us together so he could "save me," at which point I just told him I thought further conversation was pointless and stopped replying.
So much for respecting my decisions, I suppose.
Looking back, I think it was inevitable. A guy in his position basically HAD to believe that way, because giving intelligent, rational people credit for making other decisions would let in too much doubt for someone whose job was to go out and convert others.

Nah. I like to hear some of the questions people ask, and if I have an answer then I answer. No other reason. I am firm in my belief as I am sure you are in yours. I am not here to argue, or be mean, or cause strife. People have questions and if they have a decent question, it deserves to b answered. Just as you think you are right, so do we. If you were truly tolerant or open minded you would accept that...but then I don't believe anyone is truly tolerant or open minded so I know I am speaking to the wind.

I am a Christian and can say imphatically: No I do not come to this forum because I secretly doubt God. Interesting question though for those who think they are Christians simply because their Parents were, or because they attend Church. Heck I can walk into a garage and I won't become a car. Just like I can walk into a Church and it doesnt make me a Christian. Only Christ can make one a Christian...

Religion - the belief in a higher power, being, or God. That would define the beliefs of Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, and so on. Where do atheists fit in?

No one both counts. I think the groups may be curious about one another, but I don't think anyone is in here to find another way to believe. I think we're all pretty set in our beliefs. I respect that, and I've learned some things I didn't know about other belief systems.

That must be it! :-) Afterall, we atheists have all the fun and we're no more prone to god's wrath than the christians. We also seem to get all the education as well.

I think that we Christians are interested in knowing how others think and feel about certain subjects...hoping that something we say may help out someone else who is honestly searching for answers.

doubt this as most of us may be satisfied to be where we are at least at the present time. most may be here to gain more wisdom and knowledge then to teach others what we have learned. this will others to take what little good each of us offer and incorporate this into their wisdom and knowledge so all of us can become wiser and more knowledgeable.
