Fleas live just a few weeks, but long enough to cause considerable damage.
I recommend the flea treatment Frontline, Advantage, or Revolution. They are sold at vets. Do not get flea products from regular stores. They don't work and only result in putting toxins in your home that are bad for you and your pets.
Apply the treatment MONTHLY. One application is not going to rid the fleas.
Vacuum your home and shake out your dog's bedding (outside) regularly to cut down on flea eggs.

Haven't you tried any of the numerous anti-flea products on the market? Frontline drops (which you can buy from a pet pharmacy or from the vet) last for 3 months, while Frontline spray can last a month or so but is easier to apply i guess. I have used both but i find the drops more convenient when you get the hang of them. In dogs it is mandatory to use such products not only because they protect from fleas, but also because they are a good barrier against more dangerous things like ticks and sandfly which can cause your dog a great deal of suffering, disease and even death.

Of course if you have fleas already make sure you clean out the house completely...and i mean completely. I have helped a friend do this once when her cat got fleas. Vacuum the rugs, carpets, wash all bed linen, vacuum or wash all the curtains and cushions, Clean the fabric sofas and armchairs and spray the dog's bed thoroughly with anti-flea spray and wash it. Good Luck, its a tough job, but you'll get rid of them finally!

I'm not sure about the life span of fleas, they are an never ending battle it seems. In order to keep fleas out of the house and off of the dog/cat, your gonna have to treat the outside of your house. Virbac knockout foggers is good for indoor/outdoor use it has helped with me. The other flea treatment that I really like is called advantage for dogs/cats. Its a once a month topical, its also waterproof.

I don't know the lifespan on fleas but I can give you some tips on flea control.

First of all, you will never, ever be 100% free of fleas. Their like cockroaches, they keep on coming. The best you can do is manage their numbers.

If you have a yard, use flea killer on it. Your local garden supply shop will have some in stock. It kills fleas and like bugs but not your grass.

Inside the house use flea spray on your carpet. You could 'bomb' your house using products such as Raid, but only if your infestation is truly fierce since it's a lot of clean up work afterword. (If you do this I suggest renting a heavy duty vaccum cleaner and going over every inch of carpet)

The last step is of course, using flea killer on your dog. Even if you spray your yard, you neighbor might not. It will help control their numbers but they'll still jump the fence so to speak.

Limit the amount of time your dog stays outside. Let him out to do his business but bring him back inside. It he's an active animal then try using a flea comb on him before letting him back inside after a long stay out. You don't have to get deeply involved in it but it will limit the number of eggs you bring inside.

You'll never win the war, but you can win alot of battles.

I don't know the life span, but the eggs can survive for years in carpet and bedding, so they keep coming back. You have to vacuum a lot, and wash the bedding and flea bomb every few weeks until all he eggs have hatched. You pretty much can't kill them in the egg stage.

This life cycle can last from two weeks to eight months. Flea eggs can lay dormant for up to 90 days before hatching. Eggs usually hatch within two weeks into larvae found in floor cracks and crevices, along baseboards, under rug edges, and in furniture or beds. Larvae are blind, avoid light, pass through three larval stages, and take a week to several months to develop. Their food consists of digested blood from adult flea feces, dead skin, hair, feathers, and other organic debris. Larvae do not suck blood. Pupae mature into adulthood within a silken cocoon woven by the larva, to which pet hair, carpet fiber, dust, grass cuttings, and other debris adhere. In five to fourteen days, adult fleas can emerge, or may remain resting in the cocoon until they detect vibration (pet and people movement,) pressure (host animal lying down on them,) heat, noise, or carbon dioxide (meaning a potential blood source is near.) Adult fleas cannot survive or lay eggs without a blood meal, but may hibernate for two months to one year without feeding. Newly emerged adult fleas live only about one week if a blood meal is not obtained.

To keep them from getting on your dog,you willl first have to treat the house and then you wil have treat the dog. . I use Frontline on my dog, but you can also use Advantix. . Both are topical treatments you you put on the dog monthly.

the life span is relatively short. You must not only treat your pets but your home, yard and anywhere else the pet has been. Fleas are not easy to defeat. After prolonged exposure to the same killing chemical they appear to be almost immune.
