when i was younger i had to have a bone scan.. that is where they give you a shot of radioisotopes, wait for it to go threw your system and then put you under a machine that reads where the isotopes have connected to your body.. not positive that's what you are going for.. but it sounds close.

Radio-isotope means a radiologically active substance (the same substance when missing an electron may not be active & so therputically useless).
It depends on what you have.
Basically its a form of radiation therapy, very small dose delivered to the body via capsule or a juice like liquid.
Again if you ask what it is, then you must specifiy what do you have to need such a treatment.
