does anybody know any good freeware programs I could download that would allow me to do some basic editing of a few digital recordings I have. Something that would allow me to cut and paste pieces. if possible help me to filter out some background noise etc.

Audacity!

Dont bother to look elsewhere. Audacity 1.3 is good. However they forgot to bundle one of the filters (useful fr vinyl records). So there is a 1.31 exe someplace. You will have to search via Yahoo or Google.

However if you are not recording from old vinyl records, just install the version 1.3. I have used it extensively to backup mu misic collection and have done about 40 LPs.

You will like it. It is very user friendly and allows you to label tracks too.
