The Catholic Church teaches that the Pope is infallible at closely defined times.

The Pope is only infallible when he, in union with the body of bishops, solemnly teaches that a doctrine as true.

This comes from the words of Jesus to Peter (the first Pope) and the Apostles (the first bishops), "Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven" (Matthew 18:18) and "He who hears you hears me" (Luke 10:16).

At all other times the Pope can be just as sinful as you and me and be in need of forgiveness.

With love in Christ.

I thought the pope was infallible? Sorry, as a protestant, I couldn't resist. That said, I don't see that he made a mistake. Certain Muslims (not all) took one line of his speech (which was actually a quotation that is 100's of years old) out of context and used it as an excuse to violently protest the accusation that they are violent.

Think about it. Muslims were incensed that they were accused of being violent, so in protest some of them murdered a nun and burned churches. Does anyone else see a problem here that has nothing to do with the pope?

He is allowed to make a mistake, but if he does (and it offends THIS MANY PEOPLE), then someone of his high stature should definitely be an example and apologize outrightly, not be 'sincerely regretful' for the consequences.

The difference between you, me, and the pope...that should be obvious enough.

Shouldn't the press also take resposibility and apologise for quoting the pope out of context? Is it okay for people to die because of unethical and irresponsible news reporting?

It wasn't a mistake. If it were, he would have made his apologies and it would be over.
