I don't know if there's any truth to it, but I read once that couples tend to catch each other's colds less often than people living together who are not in a relationship. Supposedly couples can transmit antibodies in their saliva (when kissing). Theoretically, shared drinking cups could do the same in a family.
When my little girl first began using a cup, I kept her own cup out for her to use each day, but somehow she always seemed to end up picking up my cup by the sink and using that instead. Eventually this evolved into us just having one cup by the sink. This is purely anecdotal evidence, but I don't recall my little girl and I *ever* catching a cold from each other.

I had specific cups assigned to each individual in my household (in other words -- me, the single parent -- and the children each had their own placesettings including cups) and I would wash these after each use and then put them out for the next meal.
I do NOT reuse the same cup for everyone becuase of all the viruses, bacterial infections, etc that are present during the school day, and each of the children get exposed to during the school day. That way, I would limit the chance of passing along the diseases or infections that they brought home with them.

The problem is that we now treat so many of our household items with bleach and anti-bacterial cleaners that we never have the chance to build up resistance to many of the bugs that our parents did...we are making life a little harder for ourselves in the long run, so no, I'm perfectlt happy to share a cup/glass/fork with my husband, I mean jeez we share bodily fluids for heavens sake!
When we do have kids I'm not going to wrap them up in cotton wool either.

We try not too. It cuts down on the spread of germs especially if you have a cold, ETC.
