if you are immersed in the culture (i.e. you live in the place where the language is predominately spoken) then yes, you can be fluent in a language after one year.

You probably could but how will you know you have the correct pronunciation? The slightest influx in tone or vowel sound might mean a whole other word you haven't learned- like a slang insult. Take Saddam Husein's name for example. When pronounced by the first President Bush he would say Sad am rather than Sa dahm. Sad am means whore lol. Kudos to Bush for the little dig- but that was intentional. If you're using an audible tutorial you won't have to worry because you'll hear the correct pronunciation.
What language are you going to learn?
Have a great day!!!

Depending on the age of the learner, it can even be less than a year. I have witnessed children gain a fair amount of fluency in a second language in as little as 3 to 6 months - and all just by being around the speakers of the other language. It does get considerably more difficult as you get older, even with instruction.

Sure! It's the best way to learn a language, because you learn how to THINK in that language. If you are forced to adjust, and you have no way of using your "old" language this will happen rather quickly. With some people even as early as three months.

Yes you can, but you need to completely immerse yourself in the language. Books and tapes are helpful, but to truly learn a language you have to hear it everyday. Conversing with people well=versed in a language is most helpful. You will learn to respond in the language without thinking about translating first. Some books come with stickers to place on every day household items so that you will learn to call them by the foreign name upon glancing at them. Remember the best way to learn any subject is to keep your eyes and most importantly, your ears open.

Maybe a rudimentary knowledge of the language but I have never heard of anyone teaching themselves a foreign language well, let alone within in a year. Sorry.

The best thing to do to learn a language is study independently and to live with a family for a period of time.

Yes. I am told that the Turkish language is easy for a Westerner to learn now that their alphabet is the same as ours. They say you can easily learn it in a yr. The hardest language to learn is Finnish, according to some people.

An imaginary language, yes. I taught myself one at age eight. But I was unable to teach it to others, cause of their attitude. I could never learn how to write it though.
