Because the concern is not just for the health of smokers, it's for the other non-smokers who can potentially get sick by their smoke (secondhand smoking).

Smoking is not the only the only way to get cancer. We all know smokers that have lived into their nineties and didn't die of cancer. I believe there are numerous reasons, 1. cancer needs a trigger and in some people that can be smoking but I also believe it could be from processed foods, radiation, chlorine, genetics etc. etc.

There is pressure on us smokers because it is unhealthy and there are genuine concerns for health & well being of others.

However, cancer hits us all in an individualistic kind of way but I think you are either predisposed or not, example my grandmother smokes about 80 a day, my grandfather never smoked or drank but got cancer.

If we look too deep and work on total prevention we will invent a new type of phobia. Just go and live and if you want to increase the risk of cancer by smoking, that's your choice.

I'm off now for a puff!

I am an ex smoker but my reason for giving up was not the fear of cancer. I think if you look 25 years ago and look now, there are much much less smokers these days than 25 years ago but at the same time the number of cancers are still rising rapidly. So that makes me think that smoking isn't the only thing that causes cancer. Food is the major culprit, to be honest. Whilst you can wisely chose to stop smoking you will NEVER be able to give up food because you need it to live. The only problem is that today's foodstuffs are all full of E-numbers and other cancer causing substances. I mean, why do we need additives? I looked at a lot of E-numbers and a lot of those substances can actually bring on a full-blown asthma attack or cause cancer even. We can also chose to move to the countryside and avoid toxic fumes from cars, we can move to the top of the mountain where there's no mobile phone masts and the likes but we cannot get away from food that is full of cancer causing substances. Even your good old apples are full of pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and all sorts of hazardous material that no amount of washing can get rid of. But try giving up smoking if you can!

Because its a good excuse to slam extra tax on cigarettes. "Theyre bad for you so we're going to add more tax so people wont buy them" they say, knowing full well that people will continue to buy them and line the governments pockets.
What about all the additives that they are adding to food? Statistics show that more people die every year from cancers that are thought to be caused by bad diet than smoking yet you don't hear a lot about that do you?
Smokers are an easy target and this is why they are being persecuted.

Smoking is the best know and easy way to get caner. It gives pleasure while smoking and at the same time makes the person edicts to it and slow inject its power n poison into human body destroying critical systems like lungs and blood. But one way is what ever u do to your body that's all up to you. One thing you have to think is it not only destroys you if also causes more adverse effects to the people around you. According to some statistics, smoking shows more effects on non-smoker(if he is exposed to smoking very often) than smoker. This is because she is exposed to smoke of various people which is even more dangerous than single ones.

No smoking isn't the only thing that will give people cancer. Most often, Cancer is genetic. They just want to pick on smokers. My granmother smoked for 60 years, unfiltered Pall Malls. She's still kicking. Nowadays, anything can give you cancer, meat, dairy, the air we breath, dry cleaning materials, etc. Next thing you know, just waking up in the AM will be a cause for Cancer

Cancer is a naturally occuring disease, which everybody is sussceptible to. The reason why there is much more pressure on smokers is that cigarettes and tobacco related products contain a lot of carcinogens. Carcinogens are known to cause cancers and accordingly, inhaling them increases your chance of coming down with cancer than if you didn't smoke.

No.
Different cancers have different causes
The largest cause of breast cancer - lets face it - is being a postmenopausal woman.
No insult intended, but this is a simple medical fact. I think the current rate is about 80% of all breast cancers occur in postmenopausal women. And 1 in 9 women will get breast cancer - regardless of whether or not they smoke, drink, have unprotected sex, are exposed to asbestos or share needles for drugs.
Yes, smoking is linked to lung cancer, heart diseases etc. But lets face it ... if everyone did gve up smoking, this country would go bankrupt. The government rakes in millions and millions in tax on tobacco products.

Pressure is generated by PROVEN causes, however, there are many different CAUSES of cancer just as there are many different TYPES of cancer.ie. sunburn/skin cancer, some types of excess radiation/leukemia. Smoking is primarily linked with lung cancer (proven) which is one of the leading causes of death in adults.Proponents of stop smoking legislature feel that a cessation of this habit would lower the death rate, relax financial burdens on the families as well as psychological trauma of death in addition to the social responsibilities of caring for survivors (children) without resources (parental death) Should society fail to motivate you to stop smoking maybe a health scare will.....Hope it won't be too late when you get it.
PS. Your smoking does not only effect you, it impacts those around you. Big Issue

There are more than 100 types of cancers; any part of the body can be affected.
In 2005, 7.6 million people died of cancer - 13% of the 58 million deaths worldwide.
More than 70% of all cancer deaths occur in low and middle income countries.
Worldwide, the 5 most common types of cancer that kill men are (in order of frequency): lung, stomach, liver, colorectal and oesophagus
Worldwide, the 5 most common types of cancer that kill women are (in the order of frequency): breast, lung, stomach, colorectal and cervical
Tobacco use is the single largest preventable cause of cancer in the world.
One fifth of all cancers worldwide are caused by a chronic infection, for example human papillomavirus (HPV) causes cervical cancer and hepatitis B virus (HBV) causes liver cancer.
A third of cancers could be cured if detected early and treated adequately.
All patients in need of pain relief could be helped if current knowledge about pain control and palliative care were applied.
40% of cancer could be prevented, mainly by not using tobacco, having a healthy diet, being physically active and preventing infections that may cause cancer.

hmmm... i think the pressure is on smokers because smoking is deemed unnecessary. I occassionally smoke a cigar and you know what? I dont care. We're all going to die anyway and in the cosmic scheme of things 90 years isn't that much older than 40 or 50.

You only get one shot at a lifetime; enjoy yourself. ^_^
