My date is from the west coast....we don't know eachother too well, he came out here for the wedding, and also to get to know me better....(friend of the family at this point)...
SO apparently "formal" means something else where he's from. I can't allow him to go to the wedding in casual wear, both for his sake, and out of respect for the bride and groom....What's a good solution?? Should I offer to buy a shirt?? Would it be rude to ask him to borrow a tie and jacket from a relative of mine?

Politely explain to him that this is a formal affair. Then go down to your nearest Goodwill with him and pick out something nice for him to wear. It wont cost much and he wont feel like a jerk. Explain what formal means in your area. Im sure if he is any kind of a man, he will go along with you for this.

If the marriage is on an identical time because it remains warmer climate (summer season), you're able to to attempt and open toe or strapped shoe. The shoes you have on are extra for the cooler months. The skirt is positive, however the appropriate is quite casual for a marriage. Rule of thumb, the later the marriage... the extra formal you're able to be on your gown. for sure, you wouldnt placed on a thin strap sundress and strappy hills to a night wedding ceremony... i'd propose a gown for the two day or evening. whether that's in the process the afternoon and outdoors, that could be extra ideal. extra desirable than something, it relies upon on the marriage social gathering, their temperment, and the roll you play in it.

technically he can wear whatever he wants to. unless the bride and groom are willing to buy outfits for everyone attending the wedding then they shouldnt have a problem with the way anyone is dressing. If thats what he brought then he must feel ok wearing it to a wedding. you could tell him that others will be in shirt and tie, but if he still wants to wear that stuff then its his choice. telling a guy what to wear isnt a good start to getting to know eachother. if hes like my husband then he would be perfectly happy dressing casual and hated to be told what to wear. your choice though.

evidently he didn't understand that the wedding is formal attire, and maybe he felt more interested in meeting you then the wedding buy him a shirt and tie,and let it go at that the jacket isn't that important unless he's in the wedding party. just tell your relations that's how they dress at the west coast they are laid back like the south is when it comes to attire and fashion. have him pay you back for the shirt and tie also he can still see if they will rent him a suit for the wedding.

sounds like old boys been living in a cave. formal means formal no matter where you travel across the globe. when he found out he goofed he should have immediately asked for the nearest dept store or asked if there is anybody he could borrow a shirt and tie from.

Manners maketh the man ... so you should tell him that formal means something different where you are. Maybe you could borrow something for him - or hire it? - and he should at least wear a shirt, tie and trousers for something as special as a wedding, regardless of how well he knows the bride, groom or anyone else - least of all you!

Lori has a good answer. My son made the same mistake, I took him to the local Goodwill store and got a nice jacket for $2 and a tie for $1.

Sorry formal is the same anywhere in the states. I have been all over and met many people from many backgrounds and classes, he should know what formal means. I'm sure he could have asked someone if he was not sure.

Yes, explain to him that it is more formal and try to find a solution (borrowing or offering to help pay are both good ideas).

Its an interesting test of his character......

I would tell him that he's under prepared, and see what he's got to say.

I would be happy to buy a shirt, or wear a borrowed jacket.

You could also just put him in jeans and and a jacket and tell everyone he's a movie star from LA.
