There is a lot of debate on that topic. It's probably not going to be settled here. Suffice it to say that we will probably never know because she lived so long ago and pieces of evidence are few and far between.

According to the New Testament, Mary Magdalene was a disciple of Jesus from whom he cast "seven demons"; she followed him throughout his ministry, witnessed the crucifixion, and, with two other female disciples, discovered the empty tomb. Mary was probably from Magdala, a village on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee.
The Da Vinci Code notes that Mary Magdalene was not a prostitute: ‘‘That unfortunate misconception is the legacy of a smear campaign launched by the early church. The church needed to defame Mary MagÂdalene to cover up her dangerous secret [i.e., Mary’s role as the spouse of Jesus]’’ (244).
There is no biblical evidence that she was a prostitute. Jesus cast seven demons out of Mary (Luke 8:2), but there is no biblical data to suggest she was sexually immoral. At the same time, there is also no evidence to suggest that anyone instituted a ‘‘smear campaign’’ to discredit her. A tradition arose in the third and fourth centuries that she was the sinful woman mentioned in Luke 7:36–50 and, perhaps, the woman caught in adultery in John 7:53–8:11; in 591, Pope Gregory I included this teaching in a sermon. Although such identifications were probably mistaken, they are far from a slander crusade launched to hide a dangerous secret.
And in fact, the Catholic Church, far from officially pronouncing her a prostitute, rather than smearing her or her reputation, raised her up to the status of a saint. That's right--she's SAINT Mary Magdalene.
Thanks for reading and God Bless!

There is absolutely NO Scriptural support for this. This is a horrible myth that appeared in the Church sometime in the Middle Ages.
She is not the "immoral woman" of Luke 7:38. You can read more here: http://www.explorefaith.org/ford/mary.html
Although both women annointed His feet with oil, the Luke 7 event should not be confused with the John 12 event; both occured in completely different places, with different people present, at different times.
Peace.

There is no biblical reference to support this theory. The scriptures say only that Mary was possessed by demons, which were cast out by Jesus.

No she was not a prostitute. It doesn't say it in the Bible at all. It was something made up to slur women who were close to Christ in the early days of the Universal Church. This is not true.

No this was just bad publicity from the early christian church. She was one of Jesus most important disiples. Note even in the versions of the bible the early church allowed to be published she appears at most of the important events.

Not in my opinion as this was a misunderstanding made either deliberately or unintentionally to discredit her as She was healed by JESUS. have no doubt Mary followed HIS teaching as did many. anything else regarding their relationship remains yet to be proven.

no where in the bible does it say that she was one. it only says she was a beautiful woman. does it make all pretty women whores?
she became a close friend and follower of jesus, and when he rose from the dead mary was the first person to see him and even talk to him
that itself proves what a honorable person jesus was

Does it matter? Jesus obviously forgave her of whatever her sins were, since she was one of his closest disciples (if not more). But I don't believe there is any scriptural or other evidence that she was a prostitute.
